Sports crono required? WTB 997.2 TT Cab
Sports crono required? WTB 997.2 TT Cab
[Can't edit the title - that should read Sports Chrono required? d'oh]
Hey guys. I'm an old user of 6speed who disappeared for a many years but I'm thinking about coming back to the fold. Previous cars include '99 996C4 cab and '01 996TT.
I'm looking for a Turbo Cab. I've narrowed down my search to 2010+ because I want the new engine and PDK (I was a 6MT purest, but my back can't take the left foot anymore.) I've had a few dual clutch cars since my p-cars (BMW, Audi) and I'm used to them.
I'm looking for cobalt blue, aqua blue, or midnight blue, which significantly reduces available inventory. I would consider guards red, and maybe even meteor. I won't touch black or silver, and I'm bored with white (current car.)
I have found a car that is slightly high on miles, but has a CPO warranty, and is almost perfect - except that it doesn't have sports chrono. I would never order a car this way, but I'm trying to decide if I can live without it, and how much it will hurt resale down the line. The actual chronometer I'd never use, and since I don't track the car regularly I don't know how much value the engine mounts will have to me. However the difference in torque is significant, and I wouldn't mind having launch control. The car does have PTV, but not limited slip.
Q:
1. Do you think I will miss sports chrono?
2. Can it be retrofitted? I found *one* post about this, and it seems as if it can be done minus the chronometer, but at the end of the day perhaps chip/tuning the car would have a better ROI (which I likely wouldn't do while the warranty was in place.)
3. How badly will it hurt resale value/ability to sell the car later?
4. Are there any other features of sports chrono that I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Andrew

You can always add the sport button. Runs around 2k for the button and install. Must be installed at the dealership. Maybe you can get the dealer to install it cheaper if you are buying the car.
I would never buy a Turbo without the Sport Chrono Option because this feature adds more fun and versatility to the car. The car accelerates faster in Sport mode and the suspension stiffens up and it adds a whole new dimension to the car. I have a 2007 with 6MT and when I push the Sport button, the car becomes an instant rocket. Additionally, there is a Turbo boost function where you can floor the car and get an incredible increase in torque and acceleration, although limited to around 10 seconds. Don't know if this has changed for the 2010 Turbo. To me, buying a Turbo without Sport Chrono is like buying a Rolls Royce without air conditioning or cloth seats-just doesn't happen...
As for resale, IMO an educated Porsche buyer looking for a Turbo would steer away from the car but for those who don't know much about it, it wouldn't be an issue. If you can add it, like Function12 says above, it may solve the problem. Good luck with your search

I think it only works on the 997.1 cars. Honestly I had a 2009 with sport chrono and now a 2007 without it and I don't miss it. You can still press the button to stiffen up the suspension and since I'll be adding a tune to the car, I don't really care if it doesn't have it. I suppose I could order the retrofit but I don't see the value.
I rarely used it on my '09... just made everything feel really jerky.
seriously you will never use the actual chrono ever.
The suspension can be adjusted with the suspension button
the sport button is more boost & higher rev points
Get an ECU upgrade for like 2000$ and you get the same button if not more power.
Id say go ahead
for tune check out evoms they are the best in the game! also get exhaust work.

Ah what to do. I'd lose launch control as well. I'd hate to tune the ECU while the car is under warranty.

It was one of those options that seemed to have come on 80% of the cars out there... I'm surprised my '07 didn't have it, but again, I don't care. For some it's a big deal. It definitely looks cool when you start the timer.
Yeah, so you basically answered your own question. I think most cars have it... so you should just keep looking until you find one.
