I'm curious, what everyone thinks the impact on 997 TT depreciation will be once the new 991 turbo is out? I suspect the new turbo will be a great car and the new factor will drive more buyers in that direction from the 997 TT. The reason I ask is I want a 997 TT and I look multiple times per week at what's on eBay and autotrader, but I keep saying to myself wait, because I think the price will take a little larger drop over the next twelve months. Any knowledge from past history? Will the value possibly remain stable if the new 991 turbo is so highly priced that it makes the used 997 turbos more attractive?

The 997.1 prices won't change much bc when the smoke clears its still the better engine/tranny. The comparison to the new tt will be similar to the comparison to the 997.2tts, even if they put 5 turbos on it, the allure of the gt1 remains.

I bet you're right, it's just a matter of how long it will take the smoke to clear. I'm betting it will be an amazing car and hoping there will be enough people out there who aren't as price sensitive (poor, cheap) as I am, who will need the newer, faster model. I have my mind set on getting a '09 997.1 TT cab...

Why is the 996tt so cheap?

 

History tells us there probably will be an increase in depreciation shortly before and when the 991 turbo comes out, especially if there is a substantial improvement in performance and it gets great reviews. However, you might be right about owners holding onto their 997s if the 991 turbo's price goes way up. Plus many people don't buy the first year of a new model, but wait for the bugs to be worked out which means they 'll be holding onto their 997s longer. Tough decision.

 

I think you will see a price impact to the '11-'13 turbos as those folks trade up to the new 991 TT. But at the end of the day the 997.1 will see very little, if any hit to price primarily due to the price point. This is obviously a general statement but cars in the $70K-$85K range are not "in play" for folks looking to trade up to a $150K+ car

 

My original 2007 997tt had 70k mikes in it, I was sucked into the hype and traded it in on a 2011 tts. I had the tts about 7 mos, the fastest car I've ever had and also one of the most boring.

People often ignore that the markets for the cars are completely different. I think the 991TT will push $200k. A new TTS can push $175k. Will those new TTS's take a hit, you bet. Of course, one could view it as a great buying opportunity for a 11-13 TTS, just like the GTS is a great buy because so many were traded on new 991's. Impact on the '07-09 TT? I'm guessing it will be nominal. It may even firm up as fewer and fewer people can afford a newer car, demand will increase for prime older examples!

I bet it is looks, those front lights doesn't pass the girlfriend filter...here a 993 turbo is same price as a 996tt and I guess the 993 turbo is on the rise and the 996tt is still falling.

IMO, there'll be a measurable drop for the 2013 and 2012 cars as people who paid $140K+ on those new or are considering paying $130K+ on a used one probably are in a financial position to upgrade to the 991TTT.

But the 2011s and older have already dropped under $115K price point and are hitting a different tier of buyer. I think there's enough people out there wanting to get into a turbo porsche that it's not clear to me there will be a significant drop above and beyond the drop due to the cars being a year older than they are now.

Plus there seems to be some significant changes that may keep people interested in the 997s.. for example the electronic steering, the size of the car, etc. in the new 991.

As for the 997.1 vs 997.2 debate, that was a tough one for me. I shopped for 09s and 10s where the main trade off for me was GT1 engine vs PDK and better exterior (IMO). In the end I opted for the 10 as I was not going for big horsepower and didn't need the 'stronger' engine. In terms of how that affects value, I don't know how many enthusiasts will know, appreciate, or need to take advantage of the better engine and thus the number of folks opting for the GT1 engine may be offset by the number of folks who want PDK or the refreshed exterior.
