Understanding my dme on a car about to buy
Understanding my dme on a car about to buy
Dme didn't come out as well as I wanted it.
Range 1 25,329
Range 2 9,235
Range 3 2,264
Range 4 121
Range 5 1
Range 6 1
Range 5 and 6 happened at 119 hours. Car has 450 hours on it. Any feedback?
Does this mean the car has been redlined 25k times!?!?

25K is the number of ignitions...not the time. At 7,200 rpm's, there are 360 ignitions per second.

I don't believe the car actually hit 5 or 6. I can't explain it, but sometimes the DME records over revs incorrectly. It doesn't make mechanical sense for the engine to rev with a single ignition to range 6 without recording more ignitions in 5. RPM has to go past 5 to range 6, then back down to range 5 on its way down.

Cant argue with that logic. Now 121 at over 7900 rpm, thats a little scary, but thats less than 1/3 of a second at that range.
Was the car stock or modified ?
To the best of my knowledge a stock 997tt has specific parameters and Porsche lists the potential concerns of each .
BUT ..
If modified things change . If the redline has been adjusted then the car will over rev but keep in mind that it's not just a redline adjustment to modify a car. An engine upgrade is a "package" consisting of multiple parts. I suppose it really boils down to how well the tuner can design that package which exceeds the thresholds of what Porsche places in a stock car .

I don't think you have much to worry about, but that is easier said than done. A lot of cars end up with tunes...if that is the case, the revv could have been raised too so you would still get those - makes sense?
Looks like a clean car. Looks great in white!

Compared to most other cars, the prior owners (many of them I guess) drove the **** out of the car. The motors may be bulletproof, but you just hope you're not the lucky guy owning it when it breaks. I stay away from cars with tunes, so that's your choice. 12k miles and 5 owners? Is it an '07 or '08? With 5 owners and that DME, even for an '07 there are betters cars out there. Unless it is some super special color combo and equipment build, but even then...
Having 1 over-rev in both range 5&6 must be an artifact. I doubt either happened. I had something similar with my car regarding 3&4 and concluded the same thing as there would have to be significant ignitions in the prior range to even get into the later.
