Question Light Weight Flywheel Noise Under Acceleration Normal?

I recently had a lightweight flywheel installed with the new clutch. Had a LWFW on my 964 and 993 and loved it. But on the turbo I'm hearing noises where they shouldn't be. The chatter at idle I'm fine with. It actually almost goes away when you press the Sport button. But it is also noisy in a different way while in gear under 2200 RPM. Here's a short video of what it sounds like in 6th gear when stepping on the gas after coasting. I hear a rattling sound up to 2200RPM. None of my other cars had that. Here's what it sounds like:

Sounds similar to this:

It's normal.

If you are traveling at a lower speed, and place the car in 5th or 6th, and then place the transmission under full load, you will hear a rattle in the low RPM range that sounds like nuts in bolts in an empty coffee can.

Thanks! The nuts and bolts in the coffee can I have at idle. But this is a different sound. And my other cars did not have this sound at all. Could that be something that can be adjusted?

Some have reported switching transmission fluids with varying success.

What is your exact clutch setup? Which flywheel, sprung v unsprung clutch, etc?

Thank you! Yes, I read a few threads and Mobil 1 Delvac keeps popping up...

Is there anything I should worry about with that noise though?

Clutch noiswe

Had a similar problem long ago, rattle in the transmission area. The transmission was taken out twice and torn down, new syncros, shafts, bearings etc. The third time the transmission was removed the shop foreman said to pull the pressure plate, the noise was found to be the springs in the clutch disc. Previous owner had popped the clutch so many times the springs had enlarged their stays and were loose. At certain rpms the springs vibrated. The clutch disc itself was replaced and all noise disappeared. Normally a disc is not covered under warranty but this one was . The foreman said he had so much time on the repair, the disc cost was peanuts. I agreed of course.

Single mass flywheel sounds like a cement mixer at low RPMs. It's quite normal, but it drove me nuts when I had it on my previous car. Not worth the sacrifice of street civility for better engine response, IMO.

Sorry, didn't see your question before. I have the Sachs Stage 2.5 clutch package with the 964 RS flywheel.

Glad to hear it's normal, but I'm not loving it. May have to go back to a DMF...

Who did you buy the "2.5" kit from? They are put together differently. I think AWE first coined the phrase Sachs 2.5. I think they sell the 764 pressure plate with the 973 unsprung clutch disc.

Other 2.5 kits jst use the 764 pressure plate with the GT3RS LWFW and sprung clutch disc, 964 102 239 31 and 996 116 015 32.

I believe the 973 is a solid disk. If you use LWFW, a sprung clutch disk will take some of vibrations out and single side load on the crank. I feel this is why the GT3RS has less rattle.

The 2.5 kit was from AWE - Stage 2 unsprung disk with 764 PP. My mechanic sourced out the rest of the parts. I got the release bearing back from my shop because it was incompatible with the LWFW kit...

I think AWE uses the 973 in their setup. The part number may be different, I think it was superseded by 098. Regardless, the OEM clutch disc is sprung. The 973/098 is unsprung. Some of the rattle comes form the solid disc.

If you drive a GT3RS or GT2RS, there is still rattle - but not as much so. I like the GT3RS disc and flywheel with a 764 pressure plate.

Thank you, I have the 098. Would a DMF fix the low RPM rattle or do I need a different clutch disk?
