Should I purchase powertrain warranty for '07 turbo?

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice. I've got an '07 turbo manual, with 26,000 miles. Just purchased in August. My car was into the local Porsche dealer to service this morning and the service adviser mentioned getting a powertrain warranty on the car.

The powertrain warranty is for 48 months, or 48,000 miles (I only drive 5,000 p/year). Covers transmission, drive axle and engine. $50 deductible. Retail price of $2,751. Will finance the cost for 18 months no interest. Works out to $275 downpayment then $137 p/month for 18 months.

They also offer a more comprehensive (called high-tech) warranty which is powertrain plus electronic high-tech, electrical, suspension, steering, heating and cooling and fuel system. Essentially a CPO-type warranty. Same terms - 48 months, 48,000 miles. Retain price of $6,282. Works out to $628 downpayment then $314 p/month for 18 months (no interest). $50 deductible.

Both warranties are transferrable to a new owner should I sell my car for $50.

Should I go for either of these? The peace of mind certainly would be nice and it would be a nice selling factor if I decide to sell it in 2 years.

What do you think?

Russell

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Fidelity platinum for my 2007 CPO, 6 years, 60k miles, $250 deductible (from date of purchase of warranty) for ~$4200. Less than $1000 per year...have been on the fence but it's refundable for the unused portion.

If you're going to do it, I'd go for the bumper to bumper...powertrains on these cars are pretty solid from what I've read...it's the smaller stuff that could bite you in the ***.

I went with Easy Care and would highly recommend a aftermarket warranty. These are very reliable cars, BUT stuff still happens. I've had my power steering pump and a small oil leak replaced though Easy Care already. Get the best available (usually called an exclusionary warranty) - Fidelity or Easy Care have been what others have used on this forum. My length of coverage/price was similar to Brent's.

Go for it. I just bought a plan for mine. $2100 for 3 years with $300 deductible. I wouldn't say it is a great plan but it covers power train, engine, non wear and tear suspension parts, electrical, etc. I say not great because of the fact that it doesn't cover headlight assemblies, convertible tops, tpms, clutch, interior parts, body parts (like the turbo spoiler). It also, states that if a part isn't listed in the description, it likely won't be covered.

That said, it is supposed to be a reputable insurance company and I guess it would be working with the claims person if there is a contentious area of claim.

I can turn a wrench but I read stories of $5k plus engine bills. I say get it. Like Brent said, the power train is bullet proof but I bought mine for peace of mind

If it makes you feel better, but if you do any mods to the engine it will void that part of the warranty.

If you're going to do modifications I'd pass. Personally I've decided to keep the car pretty much stock. I'm happy with mid to high 11 quarter mile which is still super car territory.

my recommendation-if you're going to buy any warranty i'd only look at the platinum warranty (an exclusionary warranty) that lists items NOT covered, rather than a power train or other one that lists only the items covered-
I've had Fidelity Platinum Warranty on previous 02 996C2- it paid for RMS seal & other minor items no issue- Also have same on 07 Boxster S - it's paid for several minor items. As said elsewhere Fidelity & Easycare are ok- check out prices from several dealers (i bought mine at sunset porsche in Oregon- much cheaper than local & no sales tax)- ask for discount prices 15% over cost- think you'll find they're cheaper. also check with other local brand dealers for cost as they'll be cheaper.

Did you see the class action lawsuit about the RMS and Cayenne water tubes.

I own a '07 TT and it is my DD. I purchased the platinum warrant for 3 years and well worth it. quite a few things comes up and in 5 months and easily costs me total over 3500 to fix them. i would say go for it and you can terminate this contract any time you want

Keep in mind some these aftermarket warranties will NOT cover exhaust system. I was told by P dealer the turbos fall into this category and therefore will NOT be covered.

I have EasyCare and it is a lot more expensive than quoted above. Also rubber hoses are not covered and if it is one of those rubber hoses than cannot be reached without dropping engine.. owner is out +$1800. Other than that EasyCare has been reliable.

I keep EasyCare to keep Porsche Dealer honest. Had some warranty and non-non warranty work. Noticed Porsche charged +20% above list price for 'non warranty' work and List price for 'Warranty work'. Easycare will not pay above list price. When I called Easy care, they even said that warranty companies keep Porsche dealers honest. Porsche can charge individuals anything they want for parts and labor.

Seems like when I inquired about Fidelity....they said they were not covering Porsche turbos any more. Guess I will call them back soon, my EasyCare will run out this year on my '07 turbo and it is expensive for package that is close to original factory warranty, that is, full coverage except for rubber hoses, clutch and brakes pads.
Can't get a new turbo without their crappy pdk. Can someone with this great Fidelity plan post the Fidelity phone #

I'm very curious if anyone has had a warranty claim that saved them $5,000-$10,000 by having the warranty. I may look at this a little different but to me it's all about odds. If I spend $5,000 on a warranty, and I have $10,000 in repairs, that's doubling my money. If I have $0 in warranty repairs, then I lose 100%. So there needs to be at least as good of a chance that I will have $10,000 in repairs as I will have $0 in repairs. To me, if I buy a $5k warranty and I have $6k in repairs over a 3 year period, that's a bad investment. I probably could have made a better return on my money elsewhere. And the satisfaction for having beaten the warranty company out of $1,000 will no where near match the annoyance I will have if I only have $4,000 in repairs during the warranty period.

Of course I am jaded. I had a warranty company not pay pay the $20k when I blew the engine on my E55 because they found out it had an aftermarket supercharger on it. They did however refund the remaining $900 of prorated warranty left on the policy.

I used to buy extended warranties on the higher end cars I've owned but not one time did I ever come out ahead. Keep in mind that odds are you will be on the losing end. Just like a casino, these places would not exist if that were not the case.
Most people would be ahead to just take the money and put it in a savings account as a rainy day fund.

I have an easycare warranty for 3 years, exclusionary coverage, cost $6000. I'm taking my car in next week for a non-working spoiler button, seat memory doesn't work, and worst of all a coolant smell I'm noticing sometimes. Curious how much it's all going to cost.

I may or may not get my money back over the next 3 years but it's worth the peace of mind to me. A new front diff is $7k and all it takes is a leaky seal to need one. I think it's also extendable when it runs out.

I am in the same boat. However there area lot of solid techs in my area, Italian Auto in Las Vegas is very good and most of the ferrari guys take their cars to him first.

My dealer here in Las Vegas, the jury is out, the SA that I got was horribly arrogant , condescending and basically told me to leave " Good luck with your car and he walked out" He made sure to tell me he was the only dealer in town, this was after being told it was a CPO that " we dont give you a loaner JUST because you have a turbo..." I asked if that was normal with a CPO and handed him all the paperwork and he told me he would double check that. Yeah, from Chevy to BMW to Porsche I have never been treated like that. I mean most service guys realize they are the link to selling cars, this kid was so rude, he is driving customers away. Honestly, if this dealership is like that I will not be buying another Porsche. I would recommend you tread VERY carefully if you are in Las Vegas too.

Now on the other hand 2-3 other people including a manager said they do not treat people that way, however I am really wishing I was back home where my dealer actually cared about clients. But, ZERO good will has been extended, Not free stuff, but someone calling me and personally apologizing for the actions of their service Advisor. Yes, I had previously told the manager I did not want to work with this guy and he assigned me him again. I am actually on the fence about keeping the car. If I don't get transferred back home I am probably going too.

Frankly I dont know about a warranty. Porsche is going to work with you if something stupid happens to your car and you are close to warranty. I am sure an engine is expensive but if you toast an engine it most likely wouldnt be a warranty issue because an engine will blow pretty quick if its a failure. Next it probably blew because of another reason. Next Dealers like to replace parts rather than fix them. Everything is rebuildable but they want it new. I dont mind paying for quality, but I do mind paying 400$ for a 40$ tire pressure sensor. I didn't make the little $$$ i have paying a huge markup for something anyone can do.
I mean the 6-8k i was quoted for a warranty.... is a LOT of bad things and seeing I would be going to an independent dealer after dealing with the little jerk at my local dealer it doesnt make sense.
