New owner, quick tuning question

Hi all, I recently traded up from a Cayman S to a 997tt. My only issue with the car is how unbelievably quiet it is. I just purchased the agency power potato cannons (straight through race pipes) and I am curious if there is any danger in running these with a stock tune? Obviously I understand the secondary o2's will cause a check engine light, but will the ECU do any funky compensations because of this that could hurt the cars performance? Thanks for the help!

You should check carefully. After having the cats removed from a Fabspeed exhaust this spring, the ECU needed to be reprogrammed to not only get rid of the cat CEL but to keep the turbos from overspooling caused by a lack of back pressure ordinarily created by the cats. Failure to do so could result in a failure or a turbo grenading. Messy business.....

Thanks for the advice. I guess I should check more into exactly what parameters the tune changes. It seems like the wastegate solenoids should be able to react to faster spooling turbos, unless that is, one thing a tune does is change the response times of those solenoids. Any additional insight would be helpful, since the pipes will be here this week and I will certainly be antsy to slap them on

All you did was just make yourself more noticeable to the police, plus do you guys smog cars in VA. In many states they will pull you over and find that your cats are missing and not issue you a fix it ticket but make you replace all the missing stuff and flag your vin so you have to go to the state every year to get your car reg renewed along with the next owners. In CA it is the state referee where they send you to do a vehicle check and intensive smog check, no gas station smog check.

Yea obviously it's going to turn into more of a cop magnet now. But I have a couple things in my favor there:
-it's not a DD so it won't be on the roads that much
- I live in a fairly rural area where there are no emissions tests
- a 997tt isn't exactly a car that a cop can immediately identify as sounding other than stock

But back to my question, I'm more concerned with how upset my ECU will be with me, not so much "the man"

Perhaps you should talk to someone who really knows what they are doing; like a tuner or find out from the Agency folks how their pipe is engineered and what they recommend. This shouldn't be a groundbreaking question for them. Best,

FVD makes a very easy tune that they can do what you want and it is not very expense as Porsche things go.

You can put the pipes on and go. Plenty of people run without cats. The car probably won't pick up much power, but it sure will be loud.

Thanks for the info! I did some checking around with tuning companies and they all agree that as long as I can deal with the CEL, I should not have any problems. I should see some HP gains from the huge reduction in back pressure but long term, my plan is to get a set of 200 cell cats welded in and get a tune, once I can decide who to go with

I wouldn't bother with the cats. There are a number of ways to keep the CEL off.

You want the Cobb accessport for tuning.

FVD sells extensions for the rear o2 sensor to make the ecu happy.

But get a tune!!!

Not to derail the topic too much, but has anyone ever compiled a spreadsheet to compare all the half dozen or so tunes available for these cars? As a new member of the 997 community, I don't yet have a brand preference so it feels impossible to make a decision. A spreadsheet that compares price to power gains to ease of flashing to ability to read out codes.. Etc.. Would be awesome for someone like me

Plenty of threads on the topic, not to be that guy but I, as well as many others have been in the 997tt tune quandary... Recently. A spreadsheet doesn't exist or I'd bet it would be seen rather frequently. Not a bad idea, go for it! They're are all good, depends on your needs I'd say. Everyone can share their opinion there...

Shoot me a PM If you want 200 cel cats, I have a set I purchased with the same desire and went a different route.

I may be a little sensitive to cel lights, if you think you can overlook it so be it... I have dealt with that in almost EVERY car I have had (literally) and this one was the most annoying by far. A tune was a nice touch I will say, with open exhaust and haulin *** you'll always be smiling. Enjoy!

.2 are far more sensetive of test pipes than the .1
Just saying because I seeing it on the logs, 200cel are better option to .2's

Good luck

Can't PM yet due to low posts, but I'm definitely interested!
