Protomotive E85 tune
Porsche charges $300/h here in Sweden for tinkering with our unicorn cars...
Gotta pay to play!
I kind of wonder where all the amazement is coming from. There's probably what, 20 cars a year that want this kind of build? The specs are unique. The engine layout is unique. The tolerances and horsepower requirements are amazingly high. The parts are low volume and thus, expensive.
A 4g63 can be built for a few grand sure. There's tens of thousands of built 4g63s out there. Half of us could do it in our garage... but we're also not asking it to make 800+ wheel torque. For my evo, I spent 12k on a fairly basic build - rods/pistons/o-ring/minor head work. For a 35k car where everybody who has one ends up building the engine.... for a 150k+ car, where maybe 1% of folks do a build like this seeing how damn strong the stock engine is, 20k is just not unreasonable to me. I'd also be ok if an evo engine blew up, its not that expensive of a block if I needed a new one. If my TT engine blew up, I'd be pissed. That block is $$$ - thus the builders take absolutely no short cuts.
GTR falls into the same boat as an evo - everybody with one builds it eventually it seems, so they're driving the prices down. For me, I'll just be happy with a 700/700 stock engine car. :-)

I totally agree with everything you said. There's ton of GTR shops out there that are forcing the prices to stay low. I'm having a hard time trying to find me a builder that will do what I want for $30,000.
GT3 Top End (Cup Car Heads & Cams)
4.0 Engine
GT3 Crankshaft
Carillo Rods
12mm Headstuds
GT3 Oil Pump
Cup Car Crankcase
Etc...
I'm looking to make 1350-1400whp though.

Hah yeah... that list for 30k I dont see happening. The GT3/Cup parts are extremely expensive because they're Porsche oem.... agree with w00zy that's a 45K or more build most likely. But for 1400whp.... who knows. Thats crazy power
Crankshaft and pistons are only 6k together. Most of the money is in the top end $16,000.
Yeah I just can't see dropping much more than that. Might be better off buying a TT Lambo.

That is what I have heard as well! He quoted me to do my rods & freshen up when my head gasket let go in my 996T and it was almost half of what was quoted from two reputable places. If was anyone else I wouldn't trust my motor other then the big reputable shops.
I think if I buy the parts I'll be around the high 20's. Then I'll pay the labor so maybe around 35k?
When you start to add up all the little things, it's expensive.
complete engine gasket kit... 1K
headgasket with o'ring... 1K
headstuds... 1K
machining and head porting... 2K
valve springs, retainers... 1K
oil pump 1,5K
new bearings, new timing chain... 1K
lots of stuff for a proper engine.
