Having a BMW M3 E46 I was able to read/write the my eprom contents easily with Galletto 1260 and a simple OBD interface.
Is there any easy way to do the same on my 997 Turbo (MY2007).
What is your experience in the field? Is there any S/W and H/W I can use?
The reason I need it is to keep its original file in case I need to restore.

Depends on what you are trying to rewrite. If you are talking just the tune, then absolutely, all the tuners out there have the capability through their software and a Durametric cable or Cobb Tuning has the Accessport or FVD has their propritary handheld.
If you are talking about wiping the DME completely (eliminating overrevs) then none of the user software allows it and I dont think you are going to get much help here.
PIWIS can do it I am sure but then there is the question if you are intentionally hiding something.

Upon installation of an Accessport you are given the option to save the ROM file that is currently on the vehicle's DME. That process can be timely so if you choose not do save the file, we also have included factory ROM files in our firmware that can be used during the Uninstall process.

There's no real reason you need a "back up" of your stock tune... what you should be looking for is a version of Porsche latest calibration that's available for your car.
I never really understood why people stressed about "their file" for a back up. If I were going back to stock I would want Porsche's latest offering... and really that's the file I would want my tuned calibration based off of as well.

That is why I think having all possible software, gives you options...
