Should I extend my warranty???

All,

I'm torn... My extended warranty expires in two months but i have the option to extend. I have a 2007 997 TT with 17k on the clock. I haven't had any issues outside of having TPMS sensors replaced. I have the option to extend my warranty for two years at 4k or four years at 7.8k. This is Easy Care's Platinum plan. Has anyone had expensive issues with their 997 that would cost more than what it cost for the warranty?

Any and all feedback is welcome. Thanks in advance.

if your a 6 speed you will at some point encounter the clutch slave etc. issue. There is 2k right there give or take. You are also looking at the shifter cables snapping and $800 or so. These are just common issues a lot of us have faced.

If your a Tip I cant comment really and would probably roll the dice and skip the warranty.

I have a Tip and at 30K miles or so, the entire transmission had to be replaced because of some cheap seal that had gone bad (I was told this was not uncommon for tips and even a neighbor who had a 996TT Tip had the same issue). It was covered under CPO but would have been $15K parts and labor if not. 2 years 4K sounds pretty steep though. Right before my CPO ran out I got the easy care for $3800, 5years/60K miles with a $250 deductible. Between a new power steering pump, TPMS and some other stuff, it's almost already paid for itself in one year's time.

Thanks for the replies so far. Much appreciated. For the record, my car is a 6 speed. Is there another avenue to purchasing Easy Care other than easy care? Maybe I can negotiate a better rate.

MK23 where did you purchase your plan?

I'm curious about this too as my factory warranty expires next year and there is no way to CPO unless I sell the car to the dealer and buy it back again

I bought mine from Circle Porsche in Long Beach from a lady named Christina. Another 6speeder on another thread about extended warranties recommended her. Call a bunch of dealerships and shop it around. Good luck!

I extended my EasyCare warranty. Used it for water pump, front axles/boots, heat exchanger, clutch slav and some other stuff. They will 'not' cover rubber or plastic, so when a coolant hose busted that required an engine drop, it cost me $2000. When car's plastic coolant reservoir busted, cost me another $1500. When EasyCare sent money for water pump, they would not cover washers, nuts etc needed for water pump. They did however pay for the gasket and 1-gal antifreeze but no more. Those extended warranties are very restrictive. I extended the warranty to keep my P-dealer honest, that is, he would always be charging me above list price for parts and above book on labor. And too, I had to check EasyCare for what they allowed, because the dealer would even charge above the EasyCare allotment which dealers are not supposed to do, but EasyCare says they can charge more if they want, but the customer, not Easycare is responsible for that overcharge. Once that Porsche vehicle is out of factory warranty, you are at the mercy of the dealership, they can charge what they want. Never had issues like this with BMW, Honda or USA car dealerships.

I would. I have been very happy that I had CPO, extended warranty and tire warranty on several Porsche, BMW and Mercedes over the last 30 years or so. My motto is to not own a post-OBD2 German or Italian car without warranty. Just like health insurance, it is a total waste, unless you need it. I would negotiate a reduction with the dealer and buy the extended warranty.

Alright guys... I called my local Porsche and here is what they quoted me for Fidelity's Platinum coverage.

3yr 36k $3574
4yr 48k $4063
5yr 60k $4437
6yr 60k $4554

Much better pricing than Easy Care but does anyone know how they compare?

thank you for the feedback

OP…how much driving are you planning over the next 48 months. If your plan is to continue at the current pace, ~2.5k/year, then I wouldn't purchase the coverage. If you plan to drive ~10k year then I would. You're not likely to experience large problems with minimal miles/use.

Go have the car inspected at the dealer and see what the tech says. Could help you decide.

I'm about to purchase an extended warranty for mine. It is still under factory warranty for a few more months, and its currently in service getting one of the wing struts replaced that keeps sticking. Its a $3800 repair that I would be tight if I had to come out of pocket for. One repair on this car can pay for the warranty itself, so its a no-brainer. They're also going to replace my steering wheel because the "Sport/Sport Plus" light on the left spoke is loose and rattling inside. That has to be at least a couple thousand dollars. Owning one of these cars with no warranty is like gambling at a casino that nobody ever wins from. Not to mention they are transferrable to the next owner, which every buyer always looks for and is willing to pay more money on the car for. So its never a "waste".

Ditto. And, if you trade or sell your car before the extended warranty has expired, you get a pro-rata refund. I just received a $3400 refund when I traded m 991s on my Turbo-S
