Question Help please - airbag light after steering wheel swap

Hi All,

I just swapped a 997.1 MFC wheel for an XPA Sport wheel, which went OK except that now I've got an airbag light! I also had to swap the airbag for the round sport version which I bought new from Suncoast.

I'm wondering if the issue is that I re-used the harness and control unit from the MFC wheel? I just left the MFC connectors unhooked, obviously, and taped them out of the way.

AFAIK I connected the airbag properly and those connectors appear identical on the triangle airbag and round airbag. I did disconnect the battery for 15 minutes prior to starting work.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Oh, I just realized another point -- to make sure I had the wheel on straight, I drove around the block with no airbag. That obviously caused an airbag light. Then I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes again, and then torqued the bolt and installed the airbag. I "***-umed" the light would clear once it detected the airbag was OK again.

I am hosed and have to get the light reset with PIWIS at the dealer?

Yup, Durametric is now on order... I know a dealer/shop could reset the idiot light, but the Durametric seems like a very useful thing to have.

Thanks,

Get someone w. Durametric or PIWIS to reset it for you.

I got an airbag light after switching between OEM seats, even though I disconnected the battery prior to tarting the work. PIWIS reset it. The new airbag modules seem very temperamental.

So can this be done without the error if you follow the procedure correctly?

Most people do not get the light but I read posts from a few people who did. In my case the cause was running the car without an airbag, while checking the steering wheel alignment.

I am not sure Durametric will be able to reset the airbag light. When mine got triggered, because seat swap, the only way for it to be reset was with the PIWIS at the dealer so I paid the Porsche tax on top of stupid tax. That was an expensive day..............

The Durametric web site states it'll handle it. I'll find out in a couple of days!

Durametric will shut it off. I had it when I swapped to my new DCT wheel and luckily I had the cable from my softronic tune to shut it off. Very useful tool if you are going to be working on your own car.

that's good to know...

old school on obd1 and obd2 cars we would take the two wires. Put on in the AB pin and 1 in the TC pin at the obdi= connector and alternate them to ground and that would remove the abs lights in all jap cars.

Just checked their site, that looks like a newer feature that wasn't there when I got mine. I have the enthusiast version not the professional. I think it's time I upgraded.

Update

Durametric did clear the airbag faults. Now I need to explore what else it can do. I got the Pro version so it has the coding capabilities.

I'll take the car to work tomorrow and no doubt will love the new steering wheel. Then the car will head to GMG soon for some mods, followed by a full detail.

Woohoo!

FWIW I just coded the seat belt warning off (yes I always wear one, don't need the obnoxious chiming) and the auto-open/close windows with remote option. I haven't found anything else worth fiddling with in the coding as there is no documentation and still surprisingly little info posted on the web about these features.
