Debating the 996TT to 997TT upgrade and looking for some opinions on cost

Hey guys,

So I'm in a weird boat right now. My wife is fully convinced that owning a gray car in Seattle is a death sentence because it blends in with the roads (not the 500hp). So she wants me to wrap my 996TT. I don't particularly like Seal Gray and I wanted a white car anyway...but a good wrap would be 6k...to ultimately change the color to white which I could have had from the factory in the first place.

So I started thinking about the things I don't like about the 996. Namely - suspension is too floaty, turbo lag (which might be fun actually), lightweight flywheel/clutch feel is annoying, ugly headlights, interior is lame.

6k only really fixes one of those problems, whereas 20-30k could fix ALL those problems depending on the car I can find. Clearly this isn't a trivial amount of money, but I'm trying to figure out what I could expect to pay for a car that has equivalent mods to my own.

The things I have and I'm probably going to redo anyway:
1) Tune that won't blow up the car
2) potentially GT2 wing - I love the look
3) wheels
4) upgraded audio
5) Exhaust

My car is by no means mega modded, but I have a feeling I'll do those things again anyway...so I'd rather buy a completed car vs do it myself at full retail.

What does a 07-08, non ugly color, non vert, 6 spd run you with like 40k miles? I'm seeing prices all over the board, but after the sale they are taken down immediately. What's the realistic price here? I can't just ebay it because those cars are mostly stock.

Am I looking at 70k? 75k?

1. black and silver are the easy to find colors. if you can live with either it will make your life easier. White is a very very small market and will make your life very difficult.

2. I got exactly what you are looking for'ish for 65k. 49k miles, OE gt2 wing, HRE wheels, Pioneer nav, Europipe exhaust, TPC headers, intercoolers, upgraded turbos. finding this car took me 7 months of looking at every 911 turbo to pop up on autotrader, manheim, and craigslist east of colorado.

3. Lol @ your wife thinking your gray car is asphalt camo.

I say do it. The 996... well you know.

I picked up my 997.1 last year - 2007 6-speed coupe 20k well maintained, Tubi exhaust included $72k. I added a new head unit and FVD tune on my own. That was last year - would expect it a little cheaper but not much.

I'd prob prefer to sell the 996 and find a sweet 997 and save myself some of the headache of the conversion. Good luck.

I think one with 40k+ miles with mods will be in the high 60s - low 70's. Don't forget to add sales tax (unless you don't have anywhere you're from).

Thanks for the quick thoughts guys. Question - what are acceptable interior colors?

I've always felt these forums (996 or 997), everyone is like "Black or NOTHING! All other colors are unacceptable!"

I really like the cocoa color for example. Does that mean I can get a good deal because I have bad taste?

Does white carry that 3-5k premium that it seemed to carry on 996s?

When searching for my 997TT, I wanted black only for the interior.
I did settle on Stone Grey which is a dark grey.

As for the cocoa, yes you will find those a bit lower because they are often harder to sell.

Is cocoa, chocolate? If so I love that color. I would not expect a lower price. I would not pay more for white. To many other nice colors. Just my opinion.

Interior colors are what you make of them. I like lots of the colors, with black being my least favorite over maybe beige in this platform. I LOVE the sea blue interior my car has. It is subtle, but such a nice change from the run of the mill black or grey.

I'd upgrade to the 997 if you have the means to do so. The 996 is on the come up but I believe the 997 can be had a good price and it's as low now as they will be.

And interior matters. Black on a exterior is nice but interiors should be contrasting. I love my black over Terri

I sold my 07 tt with 34k miles for 69k about 3.5 months ago. It was option pretty good. Had exhaust, coil overs and rims (but the buy wanted stocks wheels instead) my car was very clean and had a paint correction detail done about 6 month before. Not sure if the market has changed much from then but many offers were in the mid 60s with dealers in the low 60s . Just to give your idea of prices

I have basically exactly what you are looking for, for sale.

Lots of interest but sway back and fourth on getting rid of it.

Great cars, but so is a 996. 997 is better in many ways though.

I saw your car in the classifieds - you pros always have the best pictures! haha.

I bought my car in the "great recession" and got a pretty solid deal on it. I might wait for another collapse for the upgrade. Ah the dilemmas. Wife just told me "Don't spend 70k on a new car, just wrap yours and keep it forever!". I really like the 997s though!

Sell your car and bring home the 997 and tell her you wrapped the 996. Problem solved

The thing that immediately comes to mind to me -

"You are wrong. But if you would like me to agree with you, I would be more than happy to upgrade to a 997 Turbo. I am not spending 6k on a worthless wrap that may actually devalue my current car, and concerns of the paint holding up when it is removed."

Of course, my wife was not always this upset with me. It has taken me many years to get her this pissed off
