In for direction as well. My wife will not go out in the 911, we always take her car on date nights and trips due to the rash ride. I personally dont think its that bad but I would if there is a way to improve it further I would be interested.

Does a new coil over set up help with the ride quality or just improve the handling? Ideally I would like to improve both if possible.

Michelins with 33 in the fronts and 39 in the rears should soften the ride a little.

This might sound crazy, but a good set of high quality coil overs can improve your ride quality dramatically!

My old 996T had H&R sway bars, on stock suspension with 19" 997T wheels. The ride on bumpy roads were very harsh. The moment I installed my KW V3 with a much lower ride height then stock, the drive was MUCH improved, as if it was a completely different car. Even with it being much lower then stock, it absorbed the bumps with out that initial harsh hit and the rebound control made the car feel planted, controlled, but completely smooth. I can only imagine if I had the ride height set to stock. Good, quality engineered suspension can do wonders compared to stock components.

Just food for thought, as getting rid of a completely perfect beast because of ride quality would hurt!

Learning some good tips here on the suspension.

But if your back is bothering you from the ride, and "softer" seats aren't really available either, consider yourself lucky you're getting an early indication of a potential back problem.

Like post number 2 suggested, a core strength and stretching program works wonders and keeps you from having debilitating injuries/flare-ups, then epidurals and worst case, surgery(s).

Another option is I can help you out by allowing you to do 18" wheels! I will at no charge give you my steel brake set up and take those trouble making, harsh riding causing PCCB brake system off your hands! I know, I know I shouldn't, but the thought of losing a member of our community causes the charity in me to come out! J/K's!

On a real, talk to TPC, GMG etc. and they should be able to help find a set up for you.

+1, I've been doing endurance mtb events since my mid twenties and there is no way I could sit on a bike all day anymore without it. You don't have to buy hot pants and go to class either, a few backbend videos off youtube in your bedroom twice a week will do wonders for your back.

I have no idea if this will help, but billstein makes a "type komfort" coil over kit for our cars. In my head that + the tpc dsc sounds like the ultimate combo, but i have no idea. Apparently the "komfort" is not marketted much in the states and someone mentioned that its the 4s suspension... but might be worth asking some questions.

Bil_008790
Parts list
BILSTEIN - B16 Damptronic
Fitting Position Front Axle, Fitting Position Rear Axle, Gas Pressure, for vehicles with electronic suspension control, for vehicles with PASM, Conditions see certificates, Type Komfort, Threaded Suspension (height adjustable), Built-in adjustable, Electronically adjustable shock strength

compared to the regular billstein kit

I think these are the 997.2 turbo part numbers, but obviously double check.

I would try out different setups by getting rides in other peoples cars before you take the plunge and experiment with different setups because it can get expensive fast.

Lowering the pressure will help a little in the meantime.

Why does the 997.1 ride better than the .2?

There is no possible way aftermarket springs or coils will make the 997.2 more comfortable. If stock non-sport mode hurts your spine, and you have already tried lowering tire pressure, sell the car.

truth...
same situation except i had one 996tt (crazy modded) and a stock 996tt vert right next to it in the garage, the modded car felt better on the road for sure.

OP, sounds like this just may not be the car for you, i agree with you, the car rides harsh and more so than i would have believed before buying it. I am installing the TPC module tomorrow evening and your making me rethink that.

yikes.

I don't believe this. Getting stuff made with completely custom valving and spring rate is not that difficult or costly. You might sacrifice some handling, but comfort is possible.

The tricky part is figuring out what you need.

I agree, best advice is to call billstein, TPC, kW, and some well known tuners and ask for their opinion on the smoothest riding setup
