997.1tt clutch and flywheel replacement at 41k
hello, i'm pretty new to this forum. and I'm pretty new to the porsche 997.1tt world. goin' on 6 months now so forgive me for my lack of knowledge.
I know the clutch and flywheel replacement topic has probably been beaten to death on this forum but what's one more thread right?
so my 08' 997.1tt clutch started slippin' in the fall last year. in mn so it was stored in the winter.
ordered new sachs performance upgrade clutch, service department pulled clutch and determined that flywheel is in bad shape as well.
question is: I've heard different approaches to flywheel issue, some say you can resurface flywheel for under 200, get a used flywheel for around 700, or new flywheel for under 1500.
is resurface of flywheel an option with the 997.1tt or does everybody just replace the flywheel as well when they replace the clutch.
i am replacing the clutch and flywheel together because i plan on keeping the car because i love it and don't want to pay for another new clutch and flywheel prematurely, not to mention premature maintenance hours.
has anybody on here ever heard of someone resurfacing the flywheel with a new clutch on a 997.1 tt or any tt for that matter?
my theory is to spend the money now on maint, and will have to do it less later, but I'm big on maint so maybe I'm biased and overdo things?
anybody else out there have any thoughts, insights, or similar experiences?
thanks for any helpful knowledge in advance

Did you get your car new or used? I picked up my car at 36K and it's at just below 40K right now. The clutch delay valve was a bit weird at first but I realized all it did was make the car more streetable. But even at 40K, my clutch seems great. My only real justification for upgrading (which I will in the next year) is because I'll be doing an ECU upgrade along with exhaust and intercoolers.
If you bought your car used, how was your clutch then?
I realize it's all irrelevant at this point, but if I were in your shoes, which I will be soon, I'd replace the clutch with a sachs 2.5 and do light weight flywheel.

I have a 5k mi. DMFW that came out of our car, excellent shape, smooth friction surfaces etc. It drove great before we took it out, I would not hesitate to use it for another 30-40k miles. You can have it for much less than the 700. PM me and we can work it out. I have it posted here

Can you post pictures? I replaced my clutch at 40k which was starting to slip simply because I was making too much power, and my flywheel looked great. I would make sure the shop isn't trying to hustle you...but that's up to you. I re-used my stock flywheel without resurfacing and there hasn't been a single problem.
resurface flywheel?

Guess well wait and see what they come up with. I guess the extra 600 for a new one doesnt bother me as long as the old one was truly warped. If it was fine i might have to bust out the pepper spray on em
yep

tough breaks
still hurts a bit though eh?
they're worth it in my opinion though, you can spend more money on a superior machine, or get a cheaper car and spend the extra money on stupid stuff like latte's and more cable tv channels, which is what most american's do sadly

when you think about it though, it's rated at 20 hours to do a clutch, you can take a risk and not replace the flywheel, the flywheel may look fine, but who really knows? even though a new flywheel would be around $1500.00 it's a lot cheaper than having to drop another $4000.00 because you decided to take a chance on a $1300.00 part. save yourself the headache and your wallet in the future and just spend the dough now. that's how the rich stay rich, and poor get poorer.
my 2 cents though bud.
i was a mechanic on million dollar machines back in the day so i have some experience with maintenance.
Also, if you are getting an engine drop to do the clutch, then its good time to fix coolant pipes and elbows etc. It adds up fast, but will buy many more years of trouble free running. Its easy to forgot these cars could have had 7-8 years of spirited use before we got to them!
I'll plug my old clutch setup in the classifieds again. It held 560 torque in all gears no issue. I just needed more for the switch to e85.

When I bought my car used....the dealer replaced my clutch as part of the deal. The flywheel was original and they indeed resurfaced it since it did not warrant replacement. The resurfaced plate gives the new clutch a chance to create its own wear pattern etc. Also removes any old residue or glazing of the previous clutch.
Apparently DMFW does crap out and will sometimes require replacement on its own merits. If you have the extra coin to go with a LWFW then why not just pay for labor once.

just get a new dual mass flywheel and good to go
