All on my dime. This is the first expensive failure I've had in any car I've ever owned so it is what it is. Not the end of the world and I'm fortunate to be just highly annoyed by the repair price rather than in financial trouble so I'm counting my blessings.
^^ I'm very sorry to hear this. I'm struggling to comprehend how your engineer has to fix basically the same issue and or related issue three times and you have to pay for all three fixes - seems highly unfair IMO? Have you asked the manager what happens if they do not fix it third time in a row? I certainly would before authorising the work in fact I would have maybe asked them this first time round. Why didn't they carry out the more extensive repair first time around whilst they were in there as this would have saved a tonne of labour ? Also should they not be properly road testing their own repair before giving the car back to you
Re the Mezger there do defo seem to be a few weak points but as all of us are aware its a very robust fully serviceable dry sump racing block so very easy to rebuild and has been used in motorsport successfully for many many years. I've never understood why Porsche used glue for the coolant hoses and I am aware of 996 GT3s and 996 turbos having issues on track so disappointing Porsche have never to my mind fixed this issue in the next generation GT3 and turbo. I've never heard of anyone in the UK 997.1 turbo community having the spun cam issue but will certainly keep an eye out. Above certain HP obviously the heads potentially lifting and rods sometimes bending are an issue but you cannot blame Porsche for this if they have released a product with 480bhp and we are running at 650bhp +. For most people who potter about in these cars on road its a very reliable platform. For those of us that run them a bit harder there's always bills but compared to Lambo or Ferrari still comparatively reasonable.
Once again sympathies on your woes - I also hear about and have experienced more failures on 997.1 turbo than 996 turbos which is odd.
Selling my 03tt 6MT coupe and looking into 997.1 tiptronic models. Thoughts on the cars listed below? I know plenty about 996TTs. Anything different between models that I should be aware of?
I have always liked the idea of a cab, but would lose the lines of the car. Thoughts on round steering wheel against triangular? Mods vs no mods? Tip is necessary for me, so MT is not an option.
Also, please feel free to send me any other for sale ads that you'd recommend. I am looking at $65k and under in red, white, and dark gray in that order.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
J
Hey man, I have personally test driven the 2010 PDK. Overall, runs nice, but NOT taken care of. Secondly, and this might be the deal breaker....the dealer claims they sold and delivered the car months ago. Yet the ebay is still up?!?!? "The marketing department is not up-to-date" is what I was told. Really?!??!?!?
I have test driven a MULTITUDE of cars from that dealer and have found the vehicles they advertise are NOT always available for purchase.

Reason: typo
One other comment, that car is the one responsible for me deciding to wait and buy a PDK...for the past 5 years I have been hoping/wishing/drooling over a 911 turbo. It all started with a 2004 turbo that was navy blue with tan interior. When I got to the point of affording a $50k car, I decided to check out a 2007 turbo. Big mistake...now I wanted a 2007 or newer. I get to that price point and I test drive a 2008 cabriolet turbo. Well, that started the whole cab vs coupe debate.
So I go out last August, (2015) to test drive the 2010 cabriolet you are considering and bam....I'm sold!!!
I didn't buy the car b/c the mileage seemed high to me and as I nit-picked the car, I found too much evidence of lack of care.
Still, that car did me in to buy a cabriolet, pdk...just with fewer miles.
Difference between the 2008 and 2010 is night and day. That pdk transmission is AWESOME!!! Shifts like no other and you go fast, pretty fast.
You only live once buddy. You could have been driving around in that 2004 turbo and enjoying it for last 5 years?! Amazing what a nice car does to the soul.
I hear you loud and clear....! But, 5 years ago I could not afford the car. Truthfully, I just test drove the car b/c it looked awesome and I really liked the color combo. If I remember correctly, it was priced at $55k or something close. Had over 50k miles on it. When I ran the numbers, I got scared and realized I didn't have the funds to make the deal work. Initially, I went to this dealer to drive an SL500 that was priced in the mid 30s....I had a Cadillac XLR at the time. I was disappointed in the SL500 and when I asked the salesman for something more powerful, he pointed me to the turbo. Sold from the moment I drove it...but, gotta have money to play this game.
Hopefully the deal I'm working on comes to completion this evening.
