997.1 to 997 gen 2 style HVAC unit upgrade Done :)
997.1 to 997 gen 2 style HVAC unit upgrade Done :)
For of you out there eagerly awaiting this upgrade, here you go....
Firstly many thanks to Monster, Slackster and issysman for their collaboration and the hundreds of emails that went back and forth to make this work.
After lots of work, In the end the fix is fairly straightforward….
How to upgrade your Porsche 997.1 to 997.1.5 HVAC (identical physically to Gen 2)
Firstly this only works with what we call the Gen 1.5 or 2009 997 Turbo unit – Gen 2 units won’t work with this fix the firmware is different to take account of the different wiring setup and compressor.
The part numbers are:
997.653.205.xx No heated seat version
997.653.215.xx Heated seat version
997.653.225.xx Heated and ventilated seat version
Where xx denotes Porsche version updates. These are available from OPC or Teile. You wont find one second hand they are very rare being only from 2009 Turbos.
Once you get your hands on one then you need to do the following:
Remove your old HVAC unit. To do this:
1. remove the small carpet piece from either side of the centre console held in place with a torx screw. Then remove the 2 small torx screws holding either side panel in place. Then sit in a seat and placing your grip at the rear of the side panel slide the side panel forwards towards the rear of the car, a good jerk will be required to unclip it.
2. At either side of the HVAC unit there is a spring clip. Push both in at either side and slide the unit out.
3. There are 2 connector blocks black and red in colour.
4. What you need to do now is remove the wire from B16 in the red block, the pin holes are numbered on the bottom of the block. Make sure you get the correct one…
5. This wire needs to go in the empty slot in D14 on the black coloured block. Pins for this are available from TE connectivity or get an old gen 1 loom and take out a spare from there.
6. On the Gen 1.5 and 2 Version there is an Evaporator temperature sensor connected to the now empty B16 and ground but you don’t need this it works fine without….
7. Reassemble everything that you you just took apart in reverse order.
8. You need to recode now with Piwis version 2 - Piwis version 1 won’t do this part, the required settings aren't there. If you get OPC to do this it’s a 15 min job Max but they will probably try to charge you an hours labour – ask if you can watch….
9. You will need to activate your new HVAC unit by doing a vehicle handover operation in Piwis then change Compressor setting from external to internal setting in the A/C controller in Piwis.
10. If you followed everything correctly your done. Enjoy your new Freezing cold AC.

And BTW thanks for the information. I was thinking about getting a Dynavin in Black along with a black climate control unit.
Gen 1 unit
Gen 1.5 and gen 2 unit
These pics show the difference in Hvac units. This upgrade is primarily for those of you who have upgraded your old PCM 2.1 to PCM 3
FNG the xx are version numbers and are identical in looks and operation and are 01,02,03,04
Any should work fine.
This swap is primarily aimed at those who have upgraded their PCM 2.1 to PCM 3 to finish off the stack as in Gen 2 cars.
