DIY Exhaust Install

Greeting Gents,

I recently picked up my first P car and knew going in that an aftermarket exhaust would be required. This topic has been covered all over but clear information on the actual access to the O2's and Turbo nuts/studs was hard for me to find. For some people the install was a multi-day nightmare, yet others completed it in an evening... It is not a technical install, but clearly there was an access/bloody-knuckle issue.

I figured I'd post a little info here for the next guy, and to shed more light on the access involved.

These threads were very helpful, thank you to the OP's:

1st Question: Do I need to remove the bumper?

People go both ways. After the car was in the air it was clear to me that I didn't want to fight the bumper throughout the install. That, and the odds that I scratch it up were pretty high. Rock's DIY was helpful here, and the bumper was off in 15 minutes.

Too easy, why not?

2nd Question: Do I need to remove the Intercoolers?

Again, both ways, but more people appear to leave them on. Looking at the still very restricted access and the ease of removal made the choice clear. There are 9 bolts and 2 quick release hoses per side, and they both came off in under 15 minutes. Another Rock DIY was helpful here. The Rock, rocks!

30 minutes in, and now I can actually see the hardware:

O2 access:

Turbo flange nut access:

Strap access:

Overall the install was a breeze. The only abnormal tool required was the S-shaped 12mm to get the top inside turbo flange nut. I think removing the bumper and intercoolers took the drama out of it. I can't imagine working around everything, especially considering how quick and easy they are to remove and install. Total time was ~3 1/2 hours.

Installed Pics:

Quick question: What is this pull cable for? It was under the rear driver's side tail light (I replaced the crusty tape).

Hope this helps the next guy!

+1 on the pull cable. You'd want it to be accessible by fishing under the tail light with everything installed, otherwise you can't get to it as the rear tail can't be removed without getting to the two screws inside the boot.

take the cable and route it to the vents at the bottom of the bumper so you can reach it if the battery dies
