Best Platform for modded 997 Turbo ?
Hi Guys,
I see some of the 997.2 Turbo S cars are under 100k now. That is a hell of a deal for a very amazing car. I always preferred the look of the 997 over the new 991.
My question is how much power can the PDK in the 997.2 cars handle? I see some of the 991 Turbo S cars have big power packages with PDK upgrades but I haven't seen anything for the 997.2 PDK cars. Is the pdk in the 991 vastly superior?
If a guy is looking for 800-900hp would he be better looking at a 997.1 with a Tiptronic since I know those can be built to handle the power? A manual isn't an option in this case. Thanks

If you are looking for 800-900AWHP+++, the 997.1 with a built auto (very affordable $4000-6000) is the way to go with a lot more head room as well.
If you are looking for a basic bolt on set up<550-650AWHP it is VERY HARD to beat a 997.2 PDK on the streets or even track (longboarder)! If you do basic bolt on's (with meth or race fuel) you will be dealing with fueling issues (DFI) approaching about 650-680AWHP and even bolt-on turbos do not give you anything as the for-mentioned limitations come into play. After that you have the PDK that has shown signs of acting up past 680-700+.
I would of done a 997.2 if I was just planning to keep my car at the power where it is now, but I am planning for more and the 997.1 platform is where I need to be for that.
Thanks

Better in the end? probably not. Easier, cheaper, and less headaches? Yeah.
Longboarder,
I respect your set up tremendously and you know that, but someone looking to make 800-900 might not be looking just for a dig on unprepped surface car (not saying that is all your car is good for as it is one of the most well rounded cars I know!). Pending if he is taking it to the track with prep a 997.1 built Auto with a converter is a weapon, making 800+AWHP! 800-900AWHP (997.1) on the STREETS from a HWY roll (40mph,60+ to 160 etc) roll and you are in a different league power wise vs a 997.2 and the 997.2 would get walked on hard!
It all depends what he is using his machine for and if it is just for un-prepped digs on the streets, 1/8,1/4 yes it is hard to beat the PDK 997.2, but for all the other driving that I know I do for example the 997.1 would be the ticket.
What is the OP main goal with this car?

the reason a 997.2 is " quick" is because of the trans, but its also is slipping and I see guys putting it back to stock and selling them with slipping clutches.. not to mention, I drove a XXX kit form a XXX known tuner the client just got and i felt is acting up already...
for big power, you need a 997.1 and if you do the trans along with the TCU to shift faster its over... well, thats what the middle east guys are doing and they run 8s...
But you cant go wrong with either or set up... I personally do not like the pdk due to its weakness.

Dodson has the answer! Holding big power in the 997.2 and 991's. I have done a bunch and driven it. It's awesome and silky. PDK software is in the works too! For the SRM fueled 991 running E85 we did we are going to do the first stage 2 PDK with Dodson to hold the Bray 4.0L power that's almost done! That is for FAST. For quick you can do a stage 3 or 4 and done right it's a great set-up. With some lightening, meth and sticky tires you will get the jump on just about everyone.
Some good stuff coming for the DI cars here in the states that I am proud to be a part of!

But you are talking a huge difference in overall cost. First the 997.1 and 997.2 now are very close in price. And these packages like the GIAC/Champion 9-second package for the 997.2 that I have are very reliable and even retain cats and daily drivability. Literally just a tune, catted exhaust, intercoolers, plenum/y pipe, meth and r888 tires and that's it. Probably $10k. No issues at all at this power level. I can't speak for any other vendor packages but there is a reason Champion was providing a factory umbrella warranty on the car with this kit.
Earlier this year I did go bigger power with a larger fuel system and we turned up the stock turbos and yeah the PDK slipped and the car had driveline errors. I didn't want to deal with all that so the fuel system was yanked. The vids above are very recent with the simple 9-second package.
So the question is how much does a fully built 997.1 cost and how many headaches is it going to create when things break or little issues pop up. That's the beauty of the newer platform (997.2 and 991) if you stick to power levels below the threshold of the fuel system and PDK, the car will experience zero issues.
I've toyed with the idea of building a 996 or 997.1 but I have so much fun with the 997.2 and 991 for the events I do (half mile airstrip and track) but someone looking to do strictly roll events or race on a prepped drag strip would be quicker/faster for sure with the built 997.1/996.
It's up to your preferences and use.
I hate launching cars, bikes,etc... Because I love the "pure" power and torque feeling and not the combined clutch/power feeling.
Secondly it is easier to enjoy rolling pulls vs from a dig runs in my real life use.
The 997.2TT offers the absolute efficiency for the power, mostly from a dig, but I prefer the way a 800-850lbs/ft and 900-1000hp built 997.1TT MT pulls when you WOT in 3rd or 4rth.
Each one its performance area.

Very nice SAM!
How much for the complete PDK upgrade set up with software?
For a 997.1 for a manual it is about $4500-7000 for a good triple plate carbon and about $4000-6000 with converter for the auto. As something tells me deep in my gut that the PDK upgrade is considerably more then that.
Either way, it is good to see that there is progress on our 911 PDK platform, as it seams that the GTR's have had this HUGE built tranny head start!

Hey Bobby! Yeah the PDK stuff in over 10 but still many years went into it. These new boxes cost more to upgrade but are much more capable for sure! Tuning is official and slated for the next few months. But from 996 to GTR there are some big ticket gearbox builds out there.
On the 991's (characters aside lol) we have several cars hitting 9's solid at 141-145mph with about 800hp on VTG'S and the wife can drive it to the store...Assuming she's allowed.

In watching a lot of these .5 - 1.3 mile race events, I've noticed it takes A LOT to catch a .2. 1,000 HP cars start to pull or walk away at the end of a long race and a lot of times, by the time they start to pull, the race is over.
Unless you're racing 1.5 - 2 mile races or going flat out, the huge power doesn't do much good. It's rare (here anyways) that anyone goes flat out or goes for 1.5 - 2 miles safely. For something usable for the normal "street encounters", the 60-130 measurable makes more sense and the .2 does this with minimal mods.
Sure the PDK has a ceiling for HP but huge HP doesn't always help in terms of normal usability and will be just as fast as much higher HP cars.
FWIW, I had a .1 and not a .2. Not for the HP ceiling since I don't care about having huge HP. I just wanted a 6-speed turbo but very open to the possibility of a PDK turbo S after knowing they're almost untouchable with some very light mods.

+1 longboarder
Imo nothing to compare spending $ wise, as up to the 997.2 pdk limits it just going to be quicker and faster.
and I drive 997.1 mt and been throw almost every upgrade possible from stock to a full build.

997.2 Platform is just so balanced in stock form and a freaking samurai sword once modded. Pretty much untouchable with the right mods and as others, i have a 997.1 but manual. I been pondering of moving to a 991, but 997.2 and prices coming down, it's very tempting.
