Question Drop in filters vs intake kit

Has anyone looked at the difference between high performance drop in filters versus a full intake kit like the Fabspeed? Is it necessary or is it a better move to add Y-pipe and plenum?

Whoa!!!! Wait, WHAT? Are you saying that every tuner, vendor, builder... saying get an IPD Y-Pipe, and Plenum, better intercoolers, crank up the boost is just selling a bill of goods if you only have stock turbos?!?!? I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm just confused by your post stating neither better filters or full intake won't make better power! Please elaborate if you wouldn't mind.

Not to be ironical but, there are threads regarding the same confusion. Some that even prove the difference.

Stock airbox has proven itself over and over. I run the stock airbox myself. Its efficient and works for my application. Just run a clean OEM filter.

If there was a better engineered solution, Sean (SRM) would have found it! They seem to know their way around this setup..

^^^ Correct.

for the record, I do run a Proto Y pipe, but thats because it's tapped for meth.

Thanks for the interesting responses....wish we had some comparision dynos...I'm just confused since many have not upgraded turbos but making a lot more power than just tune alone...I may be thinking too scientifically

I've gotta tell ya.. I'm not sure I understand all their opinions based on "scientific" facts all those vendors products produce more power. I'll definitely be doing more research and reaching out to people to get more opinions and feedback on Y-Pipes, Plenums, and airboxes.

Yes, you would have to do before and after dynos for each piece under the same conditions!

Plenum and y pipe you might see a small gain but with stock turbos nothing huge. Stock air box is great, upgrading the piping from thr box to the turbo helps though. The biggest restriction to the stock set up on a 997 is the cats.
