with 480ish hp and less weight than the 996 turbo, is it in the same category as the 996 gt2?

It is very close... i don't know the exact gt2 times but I believe the 997TT is the quicker car. This of course, is assuming that all of the times from the C&D article are correct.

The C/D article simply restates Porsche figures which are ALWAYS conservative. You can expect times even faster than those listed in C/D...Take the 997 C2S, Porsche says it will do 4.6, meanwhile most mags test it at 4.0 or even under......

the new 997tt has bhp/tonne of 299,I think the gt2 is circa 320 per tonne so perfromance should be similar.
Porsche are ususally pretty spot on on 0-60 etc ,its salso strange how american car mags get cars to perfrom substantially better than their european counterparts. No road test in europe has achieved a 997s 0-60 of less than 4.5 yet I have seen some american tests producing below 4.HAving owned the car ..it is not capable of a 4 second run.

the magazines drop clutches and speed shift. Get faster times, but abuses the car.

That's very true, the american mags always get substantially faster times than EVO or Autocar, etc...... I tend to agree with you, I drove a Carrera S and it definately is NOT as fast as a 996 Turbo, which is what some of the times have come back at in the American Car Mags.....Then again, maybe Porsche supplied a "ringer" car as many have suggested....

not true for most of the mags from what I understand. There was actually a write up in I think Car and Driver on how they test cars. They do not dump clutches or speed shift.

Is it really supposed to have less weight than the 996TT? That would be nice.

It is not that simple. The 996TT has more HP than my 997S X51, but that doesn's mean it is faster (other than a long straight away). The new TT has variable pitch turbines, which produce more HP at much lower RPM levels.

That is my favorite part of the car... but what happens when we go to put aftermarket turbos w/o variable geometry in... we just lose all torque down low???

power to weight is the best indication of a cars acceleration, the 997s is without any doubt an anomaly,it is a seriously fast car which when you drive you think is easily producing 400 + bhp.A 997s with an x51 kit is producing just under 400bhp anyway.
I woudl hazard a guess the 997tt is fractionally slower than a gt2 due to its inferior power to weight. There are exceptions as there are to everything.

If my C2S does 0-60 in less than 4 seconds I need a 2 second car to feel like I'm going somewhere. My car does not feel nearly as fast as a Turbo. Yeah I know, NA vs. Turbo, but still no way Jose.

I think the two cars will be fairly close in straight line acceleration. The GT2 will ultimately be the faster car on the track given a driver with the requisite skill, but the 997TT will obviously be the easier car to drive fast.

Personally, there is no way I'm giving up the GT2 for a 997 Turbo.
