Repaired Crankcase

Hello Guys,
I reciently bought this 2007 997 Turbo with very low milages on it, less than 12k but unfortunately the first owner hit something underneath in the engine section and as I could see it was the crankcase exactly in the oil pump conection. Tested the car with hard pulls and in 3 hours trip no leak at all but I just want to hear from the experts is this bad? How bad is it? Shall I think to replace the crankcase for a new one? Is it worth it? Thanks in advance for your comments.

You also posted another pictures with engine damage that was jb welded correct? I would've walked away from it. That car should've been salvaged in my opinion. At this point enjoy it and drive it while keeping an eye on it and hope for the best. Sorry probably not what you wanted to hear.

At this point, just drive it. Replacing a crank case is like a new motor from a cost standpoint

Welds are very strong but I would at least smooth them out

At this point, since you already bought it, it is what it is. If she's not broke, don't fix it.

As far as the weld job, this is a tricky one. Generally welds are much stronger than the surrounding material. But those welds look to be on the cold side meaning sub-optimal penetration. And welding cast aluminum is not always easy due to the porous nature of the metal. The porousness makes it more difficult to weld properly and the pores can hold grease, oils, and coolant. Judging that the hole was on the bottom of the engine, i would presume it was welded in car and the engine was not disassembled and hot tanked. But at this point, just run it.

I took welding class for 3 years about 18 years ago and haven't welded for 14 years so i'm not the most knowledgeable on this topic. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Whats all of the crap surrounding it.

Looks to be leaking something while under pressure/load.

Keep an eye on it it. If it gets worse, you're looking at an engine rebuild.

Hello Zubehor,
Yes, I that was my first post related to this particular car. On this past sunday I used a pallet screwdriver to try to remove the JB Weld and see if I could locate the crack spot and curiously the JB Weld fell off so easily and I didn't see any crack not even a sign of it. The JB Weld seems to be applied without even cleaning the aerea. Then I checked the engine block and cylinders Gasket and could see a stain of oil so, I am wondering if I could be right to think that the previous owner disarm the engine to fixed the Crankcase crack and after the welding was done the engine was assambled back without replacing new gaskets and it didn't seal well??

as to your opinion that this car should've salvaged all I can tell you that the car is not as bad as you think it is. The crash in the right fender was much less bad than I thought. The car just didn't has the luck because it was repaired and fender was painted the cheap way and by people without experience.

While they would drop the engine to weld, I do not think they would have removed the heads to do that job.

From the looks of that weld, they might not even have done that.

As others have posted, keep an eye on it, on all your fluid levels and just drive it.

Hello Ed,
But I could see all the nuts and bolts that joint the crankcase together has marks in it. I hardly believe this marks are from porsche factory. And yes I'm always monitoring the temp and fluids level.

And this are the oil stains I mentioned...

The picture above is an actual weld, the JB weld was shown on another post.

To the OP, I will have to look at my engine, but that does not seem like a lot of oil on that part.

I am not sure what nuts the OP was referring to, since head bolts are inside the valve covers. There could be several reasons why either the exhaust manifold or valve covers would be off that would not indicate serious engine issues.

Harry, yes I still bought it. There is only four of this 997 Turbo here in Venezuela and the import of used cars are prohibited. I bought it from a friend's brother for 30k. The guy was not willing to spend the money to fix it but I do.

For that price I guess you could do a full engine rebuild and still come up on top. So not a bad move, specially if the car that you love is so hard to find in your country. Good luck and hope you get it sortet out soon so you can enjoy the car.

I wouldn't worry too much. it will either leak or it won't. Welded crank case is not a big deal if done correctly.

I agree. It looks like they may have stripped the threads and tried fixing it... or broke the whole thing off all together. I have some spare cases if you decide to replace it.
