Bummer

Any symptoms or CEL that alerted you on what happened?

No CEL. The car was running fine. The only reason I noticed it is because I decided to upgrade the power. The car has never been modified but this issue seems fairly common even with stock engines.

That's good to know. What did you feel that tipped you off?

Guess it's just part of preventative maintenance for the long term, but will cross my fingers till then

If I hadn't decided to upgrade the engine, there wasn't anything (yet) that tipped me off. The cam sleeve plays a critical role in directing oil to the camshaft. The lack of sufficient lubrication can lead to all sorts of premature wear and costly damage. Luckily, I caught it early before any noticeable deterioration occurred.

If you are a 997.1 owner and ever have the chance (dropping the engine for whatever reason) I recommend you spend the extra and get the cams pinned. From the many posts I have read, this is not an "if" but "when" event, and as TTDude mentions, in many cases, there is no warning that you have an issue, which means many engines may be running with this problem right now.

I did this when I addressed a coolant leak, and fortunately mine were not spun, so I just pinned them and removed that potential headache from occurring.

Thanks for the advice. I have a 2009 like TTdude so it caught my eye

Coolant pipes and cams are on my 2025 list. I see you're in Exton, PA. Did you do the work yourself? I've heard PA Euros out there has a solid reputation too

Yep. The thread (with a link to the actual work thread) is:

997.1 Engine Drop

I have not used any local shops yet. I plan on using Dougherty in West Chester to install a LSD diff at some point in the future (cannot believe this would have to be an option on these cars!).

Do you offer this service to fellow 997TT owners?

Unfortunately I have a few cars in various processes right now, so I don't think I have the headroom to do that kind of work.

At the same time, I am always willing to help with whatever information and advice I can.
