Hans device
although anything you can do to make yourself more safe in an incident is just prudent...if your question was whether you are required to have a hans device...no DE organizers that I know of require a neck restraint of any type but for racing most organizations require some form of neck restraint, with some now specifying Hans...check the specific requirements for the DE you are going to attend....
ps..I use a Hans whenever on track

Gents, I echo the YES sentiment. I raced SCCA in the 70-80s and used to play a lot on track. I have been out of it for quite some time but when I was recently reoutfitting "the driver" I concluded it was a necessity. I had a couple of serious accidents back in the day and I feel very lucky that most everything still works. One slight hit the wrong way and you are no longer "you" again. Look at the most recent deaths on track and how well the cars survived. There was no reason for the occupants to die but cars can take impacts that our necks won't. These are very cheap insurance if you want to come home and enjoy your lives. If you are single, whatever, but if you have a family I think you owe it to them.

Ditto that.
And I might add.........sh#t happens fast at 160mph......and it happens without regard to whether that event "required" that restaint, and without regard to whether that event was 'called' a DE, an SCCA event, or a Club Race.

Hans device should not be used with stock seat and belts...there are other types of neck restraints that aren't harness dependent that would be better in that situation...read this...

Alot of tech stewards and DE chairman have advised people against using harnesses and fixed-back seats without rollbar for the very notion that a rollover could lead to increased risk of head and neck injury
VSE CHUCK is correct.
The Hans device will not work as designed using stock seat belts, unless the belts are harness belt type (both shoulders). The Hans device also has specific seat and harness mounting requirements. IMO, if you can comply with all the requirements then its a no brainer- this device can help save you from serious neck injuies if involved in a accident. The neck is a sensitive area and the sudden whiplash at any speed could cause serious injury.

I can't use the Hans device.
I tried a Hans device on the track and couldn't use it. No matter how I adjusted it my head was pushed forward which I found made me too uncomfortable to drive. This was in a Vet. I think the seats must be designed for a Hans device, and I don't know how it will fit in a tt, I sent it back to Hans. I'm not reckless and believe is safety we a roll bar and Halon fire suppression. I wish I could use the Hans device.
Vincy, your problem was the seat...if the angle is too upright and there is no recess in the seat for the rear collar on the Hans it will bump your head forward...look at:
LFT Tech R3
Hutchins II
Hutchins Hybrid
Leatt Brace
Isaac
The R3 and Hutchins will work with a more upright seat...
