Aftermarket Mod Issues
Aftermarket Mod Issues
All you brave ones that have taken the plunge and had aftermarket exhaust (AWR, Tubi, Fabspeed) and chip mods (GIAC, Promotive) done. Any issues with problems & warranty work?

In my experience you should be honest and talk to your service advisor and parts managers. Ask them their thoughts on aftermarket mods.
You may be surprised. More and more dealers are realizing they are missing out on the action. They are becoming more progressive and understand that companies like us are not in the business of blowing up cars. We make great products and reasonable prices.
We have sophisticated equipemnt and brilliant engineers just like the factory does.
They also know that Porsche plays marketing games. They sell you a car and then a year later take that same car, put an X-whatever number on it and sell it to you for $12K more! This new car is no different except for some minor software tweeks and some bolt-ons.
Dealers see that we can unlock that same power at half the price and do it just as well.
We have a list of dealers selling our products worldwide.
Tell me where you are and I will see if I have someone close.

Q: What will happen to my factory warranty if I add your performance parts?
A: By law, a dealership is not allowed to void a warranty based upon having aftermarket parts installed on a car. When you add an aftermarket part to the car, the aftermarket part will void the warranty of ONLY the stock part it is replacing. What that means is if you add an intake, the only part of the warranty that should be voided is that of the OEM intake. That is where consumers need to be sure to choose an aftermarket company that stands behind their products and offer warrantys on what they sell. Below you will find some articles written by SEMA regarding this issue.

Really depends on the dealer mine actually installed some of my aftermarket mods. They know exactly what I have done and took care of warranty items that were not modified without a peep.
Let me play devil's advocate for a moment (coming from someone who had a modded E55-so I'm a fan
). Everything in the above regarding the dealership having to prove the mod contributed to the failure is correct. It's called the Magnuson-Moss act. However, if you slap a SC on to your 997S or do an ECU to your TT and you blow something up don't think just by yelling "Magnuson-Moss" your dealer is going to just lie down.
I'm sure they will make it very painful and drag it out - You'll most likely end up needing some type of mediation. All while your car sits there.
And yes, there are dealers getting into the action - There are many Mercedes dealers now installing Renntech and Kleemann mods. While it's great to find a mod-friendly dealer don't think if they ever have to call in a regioinal tech, that tech will be waving the flag of the tuners.
As others suggested I would speak to my dealer and see how they feel.

Chris excellent advice! We both have a bit of a wait until ours arrive but I have already inquired at my dealership and got a thumbs up for the exhaust and a thumbs down for flashing the chip. I can tell you guys one thing, my 997S has both OEM Short Shift and Sports exhaust. I am in the process of selling it on my own and the first question I get is how those 2 options (installed after the fact) affect Porsches factory warranty?...and these are OEM! If money is not an issue for you, then neither is the warranty. Whatever you choose, make sure you research it well, talk to your mechanic, and then make a choice. just my .02
One more point that Grady reminded me of. When I was looking to trade my E55 for my 997S none of the dealers wanted my E55 because it was modded - unless I accepted a crazy low price from them.
Tuner friendly dealers
I would also be interested in tuner friendly dealers in South Florida, I am ready to place my order for a 997TT, but plan (at some time) to go with the Stage 4 EVO package, at the same time I do not want to run into potential problems aftrewards withg the dealer, any suggestions would be appreciated and can be e-mailed to me, Thanks in advance

Go to Suncoast Motorsports in Sarasota and ask for Ron (manager) for you TT order, ask for Phil (mods). That's where I got my turbo and they are mod friendly (GIAC, Fabspeed). I plan on getting my exhaust and headers done very soon, later GIAC flash. BTW they do the flash in the car.
Please be sure and tell Ron and Phil I sent you...(I need the points :>)

Mike2727,
You are welcome. I'm going the Fabspeed exhaust and EVO headers first, then will do the GIAC flash later. just worried about warranty with flash, not a problem with just the exhaust and headers. So I'll end up with Stage 3 after the flash. I'm not sure there is that much difference between the 3 and 4 performance, so IMO not worth the extra. I know you will like whatever you do and Phil is very helpfull with mod info.

Mike,
If you are really worried do a cloned ECU. I have done so many I might as well put a zipper in my car to take the ECU out. Not many can do that at this point. You need a PIWIS and TT to clone and the ablity to get the codes. All I need is your VIN and I then take your progarm codes and flash the ECU in my car then load the software. You then have two separte units you can swap back ans forth.
