nah - they need numbers....at least for internal use...

Even Ferrari kept the numbers while now giving names, e.g. 360 modena, 612 Scaglietti, 599 Fiorano (OK F430 may be an exception)

Or maybe they'll do this... 997, 998, 999, 999.1, 999.2, etc.

 

Those 99x numbers are just generational code (like BMW's E46, E60, E92, etc.). The numbers don't matter what they are - they could reset to 100 and it wouldn't matter.

can't do that. Peugeot disputed that from day one.
it was going to be called 901, but after dispute they had to change it to 911.

anyway 997,997 and 997 is the code name like bmw e36, e46, e92 etc.
i am sure the 911 name will live on with a new code 999 beyond.
