Just back from track with SharkWerks/Evo/GIAC 640HP Kit

Last week, Sharky hooked me up with headers, exhaust and GIAC ECU with Flashloader. I also bought the 640HP Race Gas program.

I just got back from a HPDE weekend at Reno-Fernley racetrack (with Audi club) and had a chance to play around with the settings. I have a TraqMate GPS Data logger, so my numbers beow are accurate (car's speedo seems to be a bit optimistic on speeds)

FYI, Fernely is a huge track (>4 miles) with a monster front straight, leading into a series of esses. Good opportunity to see what car could do.

With 100 octance gas and Race mode selected, the car is just stupid fast. Nothing on the track came even close to staying with me on the straights. I was consistently hitting 140mph (with one run at 143mph) at the end of the straight, before braking for entry into the esses. I am new to the track and prob could have gotten at least 5MPH more by later/harder braking and faster entry into next sequence-- but I was consistently bad at least.

I then switched to pump gas (91 octane, with about 1/4 tank of 100 octance left) and switched to "Pump" program.

Using the same exact transition markers to get off the gas and on the brakes, I was hitting only low 130s on the straight.

Also, you can definitely feel it in the butt dyno. In 640 mode it is insanely fast. In pump/600 mode the edge is taken off a bit. This was back-to-back runs on a track where I was getting my timing down and there is no doubt that the difference is significant.

Anyway, I thought I would share.

If you ever get to the track, definitely go for the Flashloader and the 100 Octane Race program. Well worth the small incremental $$$.

-Chris

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us... Very interesting indeed..
Where can I find Race gas from?! Do you know any site or any gas brands that I can search!? The problem is that I live in Europe... But if I find some brand names I may find them and here too

hey Chris, seriously thanks for the feedback and you're right- the 100 octane vs 91 on these cars is quite a delta. These turbos love 100 octane that's for sure. 143mph on that straight is bloody fast indeed!

PS I put up a project page for you with some pix of the whole process. Cobalt blue with the RS wheels is perfect!

MattM: I have PCCBs and no fading whatsoever (although air temps were mid 40s farenheit)

Aisxos: "Race gas" is just the 100 octane stuff they sell at tracks for 2X price of normal gas. In CA, there are a few Union 76 stations that sell it. Can't help you in Greece. Might need to import it in barrels. Prob too much hassle.

I would try talking to some bike shops in your area as over here they usually supply, buy and stock race fuel. I figure they would at least know who/what and where type of thing...

One more question. Does race gas destroy your catalysts ? You have to take them off your car or not?!

Only if you use leaded race gas but you can get the 100 octane in unleaded which will not hurt the cats.

Definitely moving. For comparison's sake, I hit 120 going into the esses w/ an S4 (v8) when there a while back but felt like I was barely hanging on because of the soft suspension. After that I dropped back to something more comfortable in the upper teens. I was told modded STi's were in the 127-130 range. Got any videos?

No video, just data logs. I got a Hama suction mount, but it wouldn't stick for me. I need to play with it a bit.

I am going to Thunderhill this friday and will try to get some vid. I know that track better and have data and video of me in a base Cayman and E60 M5. Will be interesting to compare the data.

No not at all. You're probably thinking of "leaded" race gas? As long as you use unleaded 100 octane your cats will be just fine
