Third Generation GT2 on its way

Recent 911+Porsche World article June 07 describes 3rd generation GT2 and says probably available early 08. This GT2 will be only rear wheel drive, same wide turbo body, ceramic brakes with power between 525-550bhp thanks to modified turbos and exhaust (AWE exhaust beginning to look like good idea now). There will also be reduced wt (40-50 lb) due to trimmed down equip spec including no rear seat. New GT2 wheels are same as '07GT3s.

New GT2 has larger rear wing (looks same as my tt at >75 m/h) and also outward extensions to front lower lip spoiler (painted car color) and two single round exhaust cans (~3-3.5" d) with small 3-3.5" fins filling in outer rest of wide oblong exhaust holes seen on current tts.

Cost shown compared with last GT2 (2004) which was $51-52K above then current turbo or around $182-183K which should be about cost of this 3rd generation GT2 (referred to as the ultimate 911 turbo). I may be wrong, but with AWE exhaust and a current chip, one can achieve this kind of HP for under $10K and still keep the backseat and all wheel drive. There could be some cash left over for at least a couple GT3 wheels too.

Noticed this mag-comment about requirement for rear wheel drive which I don't agree with: rear wheel drive only for purists who feel all-wheel drive --and the fail safe handling it provides--emasculates the 911 turbo as a driver's car."

I'm not sure I would describe the GT2 as the "ultimate 911 turbo." I consider the GT2 and GT3 to be track cars, primarily designed for uncompromising track experience. The 911 turbo was never meant to fulfill this role alone. Rather, it is a multipurpose car, with supercar prowness, utility, and all season handling.

Those are 911+Porsche World's words, not mine. I tend to agree with what you have written.

Sorry to ask such a newbie-ish question, but what differences do the GT2 and GT3 show?

Is the GT2 marketed as a faster/more stripped out/'better' version of the GT3?

Thanks, i've been wondering for a while

Well, nobody knows what the 997 GT2 has to offer...I guess we will have to wait for this fall. However, if history holds true, the GT2 will remain a lighter, RWD, stripped out variant of the Turbo.

Im hoping Im not grossly under-reading your post, but the GT2 is to the turbo as the GT3 is the carrera S... make sense? the stripped out/ better version of the GT3 would be the GT3 rs....
