Question for SHARKY

I saw your 997T Tubi Exhaust Video on Scuderia UK site. I know you've probably done Tubi, AWE, FS, Miltek, etc. How would you compare Tubi to the others in terms of power gain and sound. Feedback much appreciated.

Hey AvusRS6... we'e done them all and it's still obviously a subjective thing when it comes to the sound but I'll do my best for ya...

MillTek - only one that uses the 100 cell HJS cats (expensive and very free flowing). Without a doubt the _quietest_ inside the cabin. Outside it's on the quiet side but for a daily driver it's probably one of the most popular since it doesn't really "bother" or "bug" the wife On the down-side, it's expensive and it's heavy.

Tubi - By far the nicest "looking" one and it seems to be the most favored for the sound. It's quite loud on the outside and does have some resonance on the inside. It doesn't sound like the normal Porsche-Turbo sound. Higher pitched and you can really hear the turbos spool up. Fitment-wise it's perfect. It uses 200 cell cats but still seems to flow very well. It's also the lightest one if that matters to you. Downsides- it's louder than the MillTek inside and the cost...

AWE - This one uses 200 cell cats and a nice modular design so you can swap out the cats etc... for bypass pipes (although that will trigger a CEL). On the outside it's a slightly louder version of the Porsche sound we all know and love. On the inside there isn't much resonance and it's only slightly louder than the Milltek but quieter than the tubi. It's also very light and makes really good power. It's very easy to install and one thing I really like are the swivel/adjustable outlet pipes for mounting the tips. It means when you use aftermarket tips (that don't fit well) you have some room and adjustment. It's also on the cheaper side compared to the other two. Down-sides, some people think it's not loud enough on the outside.

Those three are really good choices but it depends on what the most important things are to you. Inside or out? That type of thing.

Thanks for the feedback. I currently have the Tubi (got it because the dealer offered it). I do get a ton of resonance at 2800 to about 3K rpm on a highway cruise so I find myself going to a lower gear. As for power, do you have any idea what kind of power the Tubi is making?

AWE Exhaust Personal

Sorry, I've been away from the forum the past few weeks since taking delivery of my new car -- just been too busy out driving! I've got N2it's former AWE exhaust and I have to tell you how happy I am with it. Everyone around here notices it immediately, especially upon startup. It adds a low-end throaty growl that the factory took away. There is no resonance, no tinny-metallic sound, just music. I can't imagine wanting a louder exhaust, even if your car weren't a daily driver. Thanks again N2it and Sharky for putting this together for me! --meatman

When the time comes to do the exhaust it will be between AWE and Fabspeed? The stock exhaust sounds great to me so I am really after better performance more than anything else and I will pick the closest "Porsche" sounding exhaust currently offered. I really dislike aftermarket exhausts that stray from the familiar air cooled sound that i have come to identify the car with. I really do like the way the stock exhaust sounds like an air cooled 911 and louder is fine as long as it sounds like an air cooled 911. (ok water cooled).................I will never forget when the first water cooled 996 came out. I gave the car a double look going down the street because it had a totally different sound (kinda like a sewing machine). Thankfully Porsche has since changed that.

The new TT exhaust does sound pretty good I must admit, much better than last June when the car first came out.

meatman,

You are welcome and glad you are enjoying the exhaust. It truly is an awesome system.

Alex do you have any performance gains for the different exhausts (AWE, Tubi, Milltek), or would you say the gains are very close between the 3 ?

Hi Mike, the issue is that the cars we've done those exhausts on have had different mods, gas and when dynod were done in different days and locations so I'm afraid the stuff I would have wouldn't be too useful. Having said that from the cars that I've driven the three you list there haven't shown me a "huge" or noticeable difference in terms of the power. I haven't gone in one stage III or IV car with one exhaust and then into another car with a different exhaust and noticed one being obviously quicker/slower than the other. Make sense? The Tubi is on the louder side but the design obviously flows well as does the AWE. The MillTek is quieter and in doing so you would think would be more restrictive but it's also the only one that uses 100 cell cats so I think it evens out.

hey meatman, so glad it worked out that way for you. The car sounds great and both parties were happy Now you just need to get that flash for more power

Alex thanks for the detailed explanation, I understand it is impossible to really compare, but I guess with ECU & headers the difference will be minimal between the 3, I think about going with the Tubi, because that is offered locally with the ECU + headers as a warranted package (so no warranty matters )

Mike I think that it does make sense for you to go with what's closest to you if you're comfortable with the place? That way they can help you should something go wrong or need fixing etc...
