mawyatt is infamous around these parts
Guys,

Check out the June issue of Motor Trend, they have a good article on the best handling Sports cars with GOOD engineering facts. Max Angelelli (Grand Am Daytona Prototype Pontiac Riley and Cady CTS-V driver nickname "Max the Ax!") is the test driver at Laguna Sega. BTW the GT3 was the fastest car in the hands of Angelelli (even though he drives a GM powered Riley) and he commented he would not change a single thing in the car, not the same with all the others. He did like the Z06 as well but was not as fast in his hands as the GT3. Anyway adds some credibility to eclou's note on C&D and their drivers.

Guys,

It seems outside the Ferrari F430 GT not many cars are doing well against the GT3 in real GT races, and hats off to the Ferrari crew having such a fast and reliable car. In Grandam the GT3 is running the second smallest engine with air restrictors and added weight and still doing well and winning. The Mazda RX8 has the only smaller engine (Rotary) and is turbo with no restrictors and allowed to run over 500lbs lighter. The GT3 won LeMans and qualified well just behind the F430 GT at the 1000km Nurburgring (see below). The ZO6 is now running in GT2 (see below). The GT3 also won the 24 hours Nurburing last month.

So maybe the GT3 isn't quite as bad as C&D makes it seem!

While on-line I would opinons on the future of the turbo? My believe is the 997TT is the last of the turbos from Porsche. Why, because they can't race the turbo anywhere (the turbo has effectively been ruled out) and Porsche's flagship 911 and engine was always seen on the race track. We haven't seen a Porsche turbo for some time at the track, the glorious days of the 930/935 and it's variants with the 935 split blocks in the 956 and 962s are long gone. Porsche seems to be racing the split blocks that the turbo uses but in the NA version with the GT3 and it's variants and I believe in the Daytona Protoype, the RS Spyder is a NA 3.4 V8 I believe. Any comments on this??

TIA,

Mike

you know this from experience?

stock, the car has recorded 69.7mph slalom and .92g on the skid pad.

I agree the factory setting for the suspension is not the greatest, as I have changed mine to a coil over setup...I have no doubts that my car will pull well over 1G and slalom over 70mph with about $2500 in suspension mods and still maintain a soft ride.

The V8 version of the R8 will not be very fast, mark my words. Since we are mag racing now there was a recent comparison of the R8 with a base C2 or C4 cant remember which one and the R8 barely eeked it out in performance numbers, yet it's faster than a Turbo, yeah right.

I managed to check some spec class (Rx-7 and miata) times for this course and a spec RX-7 with only RA-1's ran a 3:04 and a spec miata ran 3:10 which is a pathetic difference on a 4.2 mile course for high performance cars, awefully pathetic.

I agree the factory setting for the suspension is not the greatest, as I have changed mine to a coil over setup...I have no doubts that my car will pull well over 1G and slalom over 70mph with about $2500 in suspension mods and still maintain a soft ride.
I have not driven the car, but it's a heavy car with a garbage suspension system... It's a sluggish pig. I'm going by the stock specs and by reviews I have seen.

The car does have a lot of potential... But in stock form, the performance isn't impressive.

My two cents....

I would rather drive a Turbo with a lap time of 3:05...

Or a F430 with a lap time of whatever....

Or a Gallardo with a lap time of whatever plus whatever.

honestly, these car comparos are beginning to get worse and worse. an audi r8 and a ford gt 500 give me a fu*king break. we all know the turbo is the better car. its superior in EVERY way as far as performance goes. you put someone who actually knows how to drive the turbo in, and it would easily and handily put these cars down. i mean it DOES run THE FASTEST out of all those cars on the ring so something is def wrong here, very wrong. a base vette beating a 911 turbo, that thing only runs like 7:5X on the ring, a good prob 15 seconds slower. the the f*ck outta here C&D. get some real driver who arent pissing their pants when driving a 911 and youll really see. bring in walter rohl to drive all of them and the 911s will lap faster than anything without a doubt (maybe with the exception of the GT3 and possibly the z06). i really feel that these car mags are peddling certain cars over others just to get a rise out of people.

Sounds a bit elitist to me, and personally I wouldnt rather have them while getting dusted on the track. But in terms of just cars to have, yeah maybe, but cars to track, no.

You said everything I have been thinking while trying to be politicaly correct. Yo uare absolutely right that there are behind the scenes things going on (Turbos power went away after a couple of laps ). GT3 has 19 in aftermarket wheels??? Who's car was that, sounds like they had to borrow someones and drove it carefully while they beat the **** out of the other cars because they are a dime a dozen.

I'd bet there a several track guys who post here who could, in a matter of days, go there, learn the track and beat those lap times (not in the C&D cars though because the power "goes away"). In fact I bet 996 GT3's and Turbos could beat those times pretty easily with some really good drivers.

From same article, about the Porsche GT3:

"..but it tended to suffer from severe lift-throttle oversteer in the middle of turns..."

and about the Lotus Exige S:

"There is some tail-happiness that hampers the car in places like the uphill esses of Sector Two. In the middle of that sequence, the Lotus tended to get loose, necessitating a lift of the throttle."

Considering the accolades that these 2 cars have accumulated, and that the GT3 recently was called "best handling car in America" or some such title by another mag, a few comments:

One, maybe test driver just pushed some cars beyond the limit of adhesion, then complained about it, or worse, doesn't know what he's doing.

Two, the tt is also criticized for "lift throttle oversteer"; it is in good company indeed!

Three, goes to show, you have to take every review article with a table sized grain of salt.

Four, IMHO, the turbo is not built with the track in mind (the GT3 is), no big deal that a whole bunch of cars beat it at the track. There will be more track "losses" (Nissan GT-R comes to mind) since this is not what the turbo is MAINLY designed for, at least in its stock form.

as they say great minds think alike. if you put together all the intangibles, and then take into account all the details, there is something not quite right, actually, something very wrong. when (i dont remember who exactly) a pro race car driver says he would "not change a thing" in the GT3 it def goes against the fact that C&D said the car was skiddish. very contrary, weird? i would trust a pro driver over a normal joe from C&D. and we have countless member who have brought there 997TT to the track and never once have i heard loss of power, and no less after a couple laps. i have a friend who has a gt 500 and he said on a 75 degree day here, his car ran like ****, and was soaked after almost no time at all, and yet on this day the 997TT suffered from heat soak. thats weird as well. and the GT3, i think it even had 20s on it, at least they looked like it in the pic, and that was def someones car who they def could not beat on or drive to the limit.

you made some very good points there. also remember that prob one of the better car mags, EVO had the GT3RS as the best car for both the road and track as #1 as well. it even beat out specialized cars like the atom and caterham, which are both serious cars.
