At 12,000 miles, I think engine is finally loosening up

I have one of the launch cars and at 13 months, I just hit 12K miles. It seems to me that the engine has finally reached the point where it revs without feeling strained. Those of you coming from NA Porsches know what I mean about the strained feel of a new 997tt engine. Even the much maligned exhaust sound is more noticable and I'd say approaching decent for this kind of car.

Also, first thing I do now when I get in is hit the sport button - the whole car becomes just so much more alive- I only go back to PASM normal when the road is terrible.

Anyone else notice that the car seems to need at least 10K miles to be "broken in"?

Just means you need to drive the car more

You should go to some of the meets... well once they're reorganized again, it'd be nice to see more 997TT's.

My experience is the same. Bought my TT about four and a half months ago and just hit 10,500 miles. I agree completely about the "loosening" of the engine and improved exhaust sound (it is noticeably louder now). In addition, the 6 speed shifts like it has been greased - resistance/clunkiness initially encountered in lower gears gone completely. Regarding the heavy miles, the car may be depreciating at a rapid pace but the exhilaration hasn't diminished a bit. Bought it to enjoy, not as an investment.

Ditto here also but my experience was with a 2005 997S and you are not the only one who notices this. I really felt the same way about my S and "hopefully" with almost 3K miles on the turbo will come to the same conclusion. These cars new are so darn tight that they go through "a process" initially of breaking in or seating the rings but after 500 or so miles the breakin means an all around 'setteling in" of all the parts that make it a porsche and 12K miles give or take seems to be the norm where it reaches it peak potential. I think its different with everyone and it depends really on how hard its driven (theoretically the harder you drive your car the sooner it reaches that point where things work together in peak form). 12Kmiles sounds about right for most of the folks that have reported the same thing. This is not rocket science JMO so take it for what its worth. I wonder at what point does this process start to "decline"? Interesting theories?

My turbo is doing what seems its best at 7K miles. I use the sport button routinely too.....does seem a bit more responsive. I still think it's my getting use to driving at fairly high-rpm for best turbo-response that I have finally mastered which seems to make my tt a better performer than it was earlier. It's a super car, but I wish in first and second that I had a bit more rpm.....the tt runs out of rpm-juice in a split second and if not careful one could lose a tooth on the steering wheel.

Looks like when mine (finally arrives) I have to take a month or 2 off to drive it 24/7 to get 12000 on it, so I can see the real potential

even driven as a dd, it will take me too long to get to 12k miles, so I better take some time off and do a round trip Miami, LA, NY, Miami
