Thoughts on TT handling issues

I have been quite perplexed by the reported handling issues of the TT. Before I got the car, all signals were outstanding - the 7:40 is a WR time quoted by MT, Jeremy Clarkson's statement that the TT handling "defied physics." Then came all the recent negative press and rumors. It seemed as if two different cars were being described?

Things started making some sense after I have recently aligned my car after lowering it (997TT) and given the huge range in specs for the TT, I think it explains some of the discrepancies we see in handling:

Front
camber -0.4 to -0.9
caster 7.4 to 8.4
toe 0.00 to 0.08

Rear
camber -1.4 to -1.9
toe 0.08 to 0.25

The ranges are huge, and a car with only -0.4 neg camber in front is going to push forever until you lose patience and jab the throttle. That would explain some of the frustrations our of esteemed C&D journalists. The positive toe (out) in the rear will lead to some of the floaty/twitchy feelings in the rear when loading/unloading the end in corners. The GT3/RS runs 1/8" toe-in in the rear. I bet the car WR took around the ring in 7:40 was dialed in more aggressively - more neg camber f&r and neutral or toe-in in the rear.

What alignment would you recommend?

Depends on what you want to do with the car. Negative toe in the rear can hurt acceleration, but helps in cornering/handling. Negative camber helps cornering, but hurts tire longevity. If driven on the street, I would keep things in the stock range but run zero toe in the rear instead of positive. If tracked a fair amount, I would run max negative camber F&R, mild toe+ (out) front and mild toe- (in) rear

Eclou, I just posted a thread similiar to yours (didn't see yours until after) but i would like to get to the bottom of this myself. i think doing a few things to your car (like you did to yours) will make a tremendous improvement. I also want to hear from folks who feel the same as I do and find out if particular options are contributing or helping this? Here is a printout of my alignment specs (notice the extra toe in the rear to help reduce what I am complaining about).

I'm going to get the GT3/RS full alignment specs for comparo. I would bet a TT aligned to GT3 specs could eliminate the GT3/RS edge in handling.

Guys you seem so advance in here but for normal people like me I would like to have it simple so I can understand it... my situation is Techart lowering springs + HRE 20" wheels... I use the car for steer driving only and I care alot of about road holding & handeling.

Saying all the above, what the alighnement should be after I install the springs?

FWIW GTPorsche, a UK mag has published a very extensive track test comparo (August 07 issue) of the C2S powerkit, Gt3, RS, and TT. The TT lapped the same as the Gt3, and only 0.6 off the RS despite being on PS2's vs MPSC's. It is a 28 page read that is very accurate to my experiences.

I can easily believe that on a specific track that has relatively high speeds, the right driver, and values HP. On a tight road course I think that the gt3 will beat the turbo, with more confidence and less drama.

The GT3 should, otherwise it has no place in the lineup!

Looking forward to reading the track test. I do not understand how the test completed by C & D shows the turbo lapping in the same numbers as the Mustang. Wondering if the Euro 997tt and the N/A 997tt have different springs/ gross weight etc?

I am wondering if there is any difference between the Euro spec and US spec TT as far as handling setup is concerned

Because most if not all US spec cars seem to be less capable handling wise, and more "comfortable" than the Euro counterparts

Would be nice if any of the info could be compared (if any differences)

Mike

Do you think that because ROW and US vehicles now have the same ride height / suspension settings that the X73 type of upgrade will not be offered for the 997TT? Any info? I used this kit on my x50 and was very pleased for the $/benifit ratio.

Thanks

Here is the RUF position on aligning the 997TT

The most important thing is to realigne the car with stock specs. The secret is to make the front toe “0” or 5’ out. Rear is max. tolerance in.
