It's somewhat a little tough decision.

I'am new to the Porsche World, yet before ordering my C4S 08 I did alot of detailed research from the 996 models to the 997 models.

I must say the TURBO will always be that special 911 in any generation, but to my personal opinion when you look at the 997S the style and interior evolution the car has really makes it a spectacular all around car.

Performance wise, I guess the Turbo will be on the plus side, but do you really want the car for all around enjoyment or just extreme power to blow down the streets.

I think either model,it will always be a special car in it's own way.

Overall it depends the price for each model that you are buying.

If I were you, I would ask myself what is it do you really want the car for, The turbo will always have that special attention and probably easier value to sell the car in the future.

The 997s is oviously a better car in terms of technology and more of that classic Porsche look with it's design. But I must say it's more common than the 996 Turbo especially here in Montreal.

Bottom line to my opinion I would buy the 997S because of it's advanced engeneering and style.

I had the same decision... between the 997C2S and a 02-X50TT

I picked the 997 for the same reasons.... but I still think about the blazing speed of the X50.

When we get the facelift 997s I think this decision will be a bit easier.

I've had both. Both are great, but the turbo is REALLY fast. In terms of money, I believe that the 996 turbo is one of the best deals out there.

I would have to disagree about the comment that the 997S has "advanced engineering"- the turbo has the dry sump engine.

If $$ is an issue, that will be easy decision. You can get a nice TT for around $60.

I lost many a night's sleep over the same decision,

Twin Turbo+dry sump = final decision.

A 911 Turbo will always be a special car

Never looked back.

Does modifying the car appeal to you?... If so the sky really is the limit with the Turbo and simple bolt-ons can make a huge difference.

You can also mod the S, but the changes aren't as night and day as they are in the Turbo, until you step up to Forced induction via S/Cing.

The S with PSS10's and a great exhaust will still put a smile on your face every morning- This question gets asked a lot for a good reason... Happy Hunting.

If you're planning on changing the suspension... and if you like the looks of the 996.

The 996 is known as one of the mistakes porsche made they corrected with the 997. It felt too soft and comfy causing a lot of die hard porsche freaks to complain or skip the model. But that's my opinion... I've driven both 996's and 997's and there's a huge difference. I would advice you to do the same... and if you're planning on using it often, taking it on slow roads so you're not just impressed with the power.

If you're looking for pure power of course, the 996 will be the better option, no doubt about that... and it's going to be cheaper, probably higher mpg too.

What I mean by slow roads is how you experience the car when not racing it (and using the extra potential of the Turbo) because that will probably happen a lot... except for when you live in Germany, Italy or on Isle of Man.

The round lights... I see what you mean but I didn't like the 996 lights at all personally. I'm pretty sure the way Porsche changes models without doing drastic stuff is one the reasons for the high resale value.
e.g. Mercedes E-class... the new model made the old one look like an old timer
