How does Porsche add hp?
You know we all want a little more hp. Tons of discussions here about how to do it, and what works and doesn't work. I think the plenum issue has been somewhat put to rest.
That said I know now that Porsche did leave some hp on the table with the carrera s's 3.8 liter engine. This is evidenced by the face lift model soon to be released with 385 hp. So how did they get that extra hp? Redesigned headers ,exhaust and ecu programming. The same thing the after market tuners have been touting. So why are the nay sayers always saying it is impossible to get more hp out of our cars. Porsche does it every time. Are the 09 911s gonna all have the x51 power kit? I think not. Will a power kit be offered? If so will it be up to 415hp?

My guess is that DFI is the major factor behind the improved power and improved fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, that's not something that can readily be "added" to earlier non-DFI cars.

We had an official Porsche press release document here that was taken down (at the request of PCNA). It had all the details such as release date, hp figures, etc. The S is definitely at 385hp. The base will be at 345hp. Rennteam also has the official details.
I saved a copy of the pdf file before it got removed.
Here is the engine detail. Note the reference to EU engines -- not sure if it's possible other regions would be different? Also, I don't have the appendix 2, it's not in the pdf file.
Changes compared with Model Year 2008 in bold, product information valid for EU model
1. Engine
• New engine generation with direct fuel injection (DFI):
- 3.6-l boxer engine with 345 hp (+20 hp), 390 Nm (+20 Nm)
- 3.8-l boxer engine with 385 hp (+30 hp), 420 Nm (+20 Nm)
Increased performance with significant reduction in fuel consumption and
CO2 emissions; all engines comply with stringent EU5 regulations (see Appendix 2)
