my 997s vs. M3 e92 (story)
Who gives a flying f*ck. Straightline performance is one aspect of the total performance envelope. If that's all you're interested in then buy a Viper and be done with it.
I would love to see an E92 or a Pontiac go round the Nurburgring as fast as a C2S. They're both sedans, have higher centers of gravity, weigh more and have inferior brakes and poor steering feel. (And yes I have driven an E92 and it's no sports car) In a C2S you would have time to stop for coffee before those guys caught up.

Sad but true.
Now let's rewatch the video of GT3 stompin the new M3 few times so that all of us can feel better....
In addition, I'd like to give thumbs up to Doug (Gravedgr) for his insightful posts! Good job man & nice car!

... in the end... you buy a f'in porsche because its a porsche...
1) it will NEVER be the fastest car out there.....
2) it will NEVER be the fastest car out there.....
3) it will NEVER be the fastest car out there.....
but who cares? that's not why you got it...
also,
1) it will NEVER be the fastest car on the track...
etc.. etc... etc...
I was at a time attack race and Porsche owners will getting SKOOLED, and I mean SKOOLED by S2000s, Evos and STIs... soooo who the f cares? Perhaps the Pcar owners were driving less balsy protecting their 100K investments... I dunno... but I dont care what the faster car is... Pcars are fun to drive, are pretty damn fast (sub 13sec out of the box) and come with a special feeling with them...

Street tires vs. track tires
When you say E92, do you mean E92 M3? Because the C2S and the M3 have about dead even Nordschleife times - right around 8 flat. Sport Auto recently did an 8.05 in an M3, and it has been reported that BMW factory test drivers have cracked 8. The best reported time for a C2S is 7:59, but that was with famed factory driver Walter Rohrl at the helm and in a car that had the lowered Euro ride height.
The new C2S should clear up any doubts.
And quite frankly if I wanted a sedan the M3 would probably be my choice, but I want a sports car, hence the 997S.

they faily and their egos are hurt, so the swolled up insecurity cheerleader within them come up with a bunch of lame **** excuses about why the other car sux. the E92 M3 is an awesome car.
the 911 is not just one thing... it's holism at its finest... it's the look, the history, the "club", the sound of the flat6 brapping behind you, steering feel, the click of the clutch, the unique shape.... it's all these things put together that make it special.
it is not special because it is fast ina straightline. i would never ever pick the E92 M3 over a similar condition water-cooled 911. PERIOD. if there's a price delta, give me the extra cash left over and make like Fiddy and Go straight to da bank

However, if you bought it because you think you are the Stig on the track and that your Porsche is somehow going to make you king of the <insert track here>, you're just a tool. All you need is about $30-40k and you can track cars that will lap the 911 like Dale Jarrett in the UPS truck.

IMHO i have had 4 M cars and since the last E46m3 the reliability issues moved me to now my second 997S...wow, no comparison in feel and reliablity like a tank...(#1 JD powers) also my local 2 bmw dealerships have become like toyota dealers (i also have a toyota) large volume, no personal care etc...so in my book not only is the 997S a better car but the dealership, reliability, and overall feel of the car are better...also i never got used to when i had a z3Mroadster that everyone would say "nice z3"...
there is no doubt when you see a carrera it is beautiful..
M3 looks like a steroided e92...not so beautiful i wish they would have stuck to the old m3's light nimble and reliable and simple look....
personally if i got another bmw i would get the 335i and mod it...IMHO
a lot of old m3 fans that i know have moved away from them ...because of cost and weight and reliability issues..
the carrera "feels" like the best sports car.....

I went from a 2001 911 Turbo straight to an E90 M. I test drove a 2005 Carrera S, then the M and I had to go back and drive a 2007 Carrera S and that last drive convinced ME that the M was the better car for me
I love Porsche, but I ain't lookin' back. My M is a BEAST and I love it!!

I don't think it is fair to lump the new M3 in this category. The last generation E46 M3 had 333hp and now 7 years later, the E92 M3 gets a bump to 414hp, which will probably be set for the next 7 years. Also, the motor redlines at 8,4000rpm and isn't that high on torque (297ft/lbs).
I promise you, drive the new M3 and you won't be asking "what is all that power doing." Not only is it brutally fast (as quick if not quicker than a 997S), it handles more neutrally as well. The 997 tends to understeer slightly on turn-in, which can shift to slight oversteer on corner exit. Turn in on the M3 is lightning fast, with no hint of understeer, and it continues this balance through the entire corner. Now the 997 is a more visceral experience given that it is lighter, lower to the ground, rear engine, has better steering feel, etc., but that doesn't mean the M3 won't be able to keep up through the corners.
And before anyone jumps on me for being biased, I own both.
