Insatalled a B&M Short Shifter this weekend

I had the OEM one on my Boxster and I liked it, this time I went B&M.

The unit is built very well and comes with everything you need. It took a while (about 3.5 hours for me) and you have to take out quite a bit of trim. The instructions that come with the unit are pretty good, the only thing I would add it that when removing the leather boot, pull it out from the front, after that it comes out easily. If I did one again I think I could do it in about 1 hour.

The shifts are nice and short, and smoooooth. Mechanical effort is increased but not that much. Overall a very worthwhile mod.

I did not take any pictures (I should have – sorry).

Compared to the OEM short shift in my 987 the throws are a bit shorter and it is definately smoother. The B&M unit is really well made and a lot cheaper than OEM, buy it from Eric - Bumperplugs. I would not go OEM again.

I just picked up my first Porsche (997S) and it will be delivered tomorrow afternoon, didn't like the throws on the stock car so I ordered the B&M, it arrived already and the dealer is installing it for me along with a GT3 alcantara shift boot...

Can't wait to try it out....

On another thread (can't find it now) someone said installing the B&M shifter requires modifying some parts, so you can't go back to the stock shifter. Is that true?

Yes

When you take out the shift box you need to remove the nylon bushings at each end so that you can insert the new shifter and new bushings.

Not a problem really!

That doesn't sound permanent though. I'm asking if you could take out the B&M and put the stock shifter back in. Otherwise I couldn't do it - some classes I race in don't allow aftermarket shifters.

Opps

When you take out the stock bushings you have to break them to get them out.

I think you could install the Stock shifter with the B&M bushings if needed.
