track tires / wheels

After tracking my car with PS2s for the last few event, I've realized I want some track tires and wheels that I can use to drive to and from the track. (No trailer yet.) For those of you who have been tracking your 997's this season, I'm curious as to what wheel / track set-up you're running. (I've read some of the prior posts, but considering we're in the middle of track season, opinions may have changed / developed.)
Thanks.

Mike,

I picked up a set of 997 C2 18" wheels, I felt that altough they weren't as light as some of the other wheels available, they would be very durable to the pounding that the car takes when on the track, also there are more tire options available to you in that size. I bought a set of Yokohama 048 tires, they are DOT approved so driving to and from the track is fine. They are OK in the wet, and awesome in the dry. I would buy the tires again.

Once you go R comp's you will wonder how you manned before on the track.

I bought some CCW wheels. www.ccwheels.com I have the C14's front 9x18 and rear 12x18". These are awesome track wheels, light and extremely durable. I used Toyo RA1's 240/40/18 fronts and 305/35/18 rears and have worn these out and have a new set of Toyo R888's 255/35/18 front and 315/30/18 rears. I drive to and from the track.

Thanks, guys. I'll definitely do 18's for the track wheels.
Did you shave these tires prior to use?

I do not shave them. I am just doing DE's. Shaving them takes some mileage out of them but it does get the tire tread down to where they work best. I just do the DE's and wear them down.

I'm using Toyo R-888's on 19" Champion RS98's for the track. 18" wheels give you more tire width options, but they won't clear my Brembo 380mm rotors and calipers. Both Hoosier and Toyo now make a 305 rear tire for the 19 rims in addition to Michelin, so the 19's are a more reasonable option this year.

The word on the R-888's is that they perform better if not shaved and are almost as durable as the RA-1. I like them better than the MPSC's on the track and the street as they get up to temp quicker and are better in the wet. They are pretty loud if you do a lot of street driving with them, but no problem at all for the drive to and from the track. I have twenty heat cycles on my first set and just put a second set on for an event next week even though the first set still has some life/tread left.

Get you check book ready, because once you track the R compund tires you'll be on to coilovers, sway bars, control arms and the rest. Its a disease, but makes a huge difference in the cars handling capabilities.

I only do DE's as well, I don't think shaving is a good idea unless you are racing. Your tires will wear fast enough.

Cool. I'm just doing DE's too, but as you guys know, this stuff is a disease.

Did you notice a big difference in braking with the 380's?

I have the R888s on my OEM Sport Design wheels. Good setup for a guy with no trailer.

The link to ccwheels is not specific to one vendor. I just hate these types of sites..............

I am in the same boat and having one hell of a time "knowing" what the offsets are for front and rear.

I am becoming more comfortable with 50 on the front, but I have seen up to 65 on the rear!?!?!?

What variety of sizes with fit on 08 C2S??

Ditto... I run the 888's on 19" Kinesis F110's at the track and threw a set of MPSC's on my stock 997 Carrera S wheels as a backup... I concur about the 888's getting up to temp much more quickly then the MPSC's... not to mention they are $100-$200 cheaper per tire... do the 888's!

888's seem to be winner. Now it's on to finding a relatively inexpensive wheel set.
