Adding 0W-40

I dropped by today and need to get some oil.
My car has 3k miles on it and now only 2 bars left.
The opc told me that I need to add a quart of oil every 5-600 miles...
is that true?
And I am planing to do the oil change by 5k miles.... (1 year)... too long?

I have been told by my Tech to change the oil every year or 12000 miles (20000 Km).

I only add oil when it show it is needed (not milage based), my car uses very little oil every with a number of track days.

+1

Each bar [between the two arrows] equals 1/2 quart... As Per A Porsche Trained Tech

Check the oil after the car has been sitting overnight, on a level surface. If it is down 1 bar, do not add oil. If it is down 2 bars, add 1/2 quart oil. This way, you do not overfill. If it shows 2 bars down, add 1/2 quart. Check oil every 2 to 3 tanks of gas.

What year is your 997? Porsche changed their service interval.

You may or may not need to add oil between oil changes depending on many variables.

As MichaelL suggested, check your oil after the car has been sitting and on a level surface. Add 1/2 qt. for every two bars that you're down.

I check my oil via the gauge nearly every time I drive the car. But mine's a weekend toy so that's really only once a week or so and it's had plenty of time for all the oil to cool and settle.

Honestly your car should not be "eating" oil every 5-600 miles, it is more important that you go by what your vehicle reads rather than "standard" procedure, because you may drive differently, spirited driving may lead to more oil consumption compared to if you drive conservatively. And before you add oil, as mentioned above, make sure your vehicle is fully cooled and on a level surface. Then check it manually and add oil as needed.

Seems to me I read when the gauge is down 4 bars that would equal something like 1.26 quarts...............so 2 bars is would be just over .5 quart.

I have 5400 miles of agressive driving and 4 tracks days since I got it new 4 month ago. My gauge stills reads to the 3rd bar.

Just can't figure out why it doesn't use oil.

I want to change it, but I keep putting it off.........................

There's a lot of speculation about that but the only real answer is... only Porsche knows.

I'll probably waste a bit of money over the years as I intend to change my oil and filter every year or 5,000 miles no matter what. I personally think it's relatively cheap insurance and just can't get comfortable with waiting 10,000 - 20,000 miles between oil changes.

Member, if you adding a quart of oil every 500 miles, take it to the dealer. You have a rear main seal leak. Even with spirited driving, if you have no leaks, the level of oil should stay at the top for many miles before the next oil change.

The guy at the dealership who taught the Porsche driving school told me once a year or 10,000 miles whichever comes first to change the oil. Even though the Porsche recommendation is at 20k miles or 2 years.
There are a lot of different opinions on this subject all over the internet. I think with the high capacity of a Porsche engine and the stability of synthetic oil 10k is a safe bet 20k may be pushing it a bit.
I have not had to add any oil except for one change since I purchased my car a year and a half ago. Never had the oil level showing below full.

Porsche changed the service interval from 2 years to 1 year and 20,000miles to 10,000 miles because they collect data and can see what happened with long service intervals (but they won’t tell you). Personally, oil changes every 6 months are cheap insurance!

The guidance about adding oil and how to measure are right on in my opinion i.e. let the car site over night on a flat surface, 1 bar down do nothing, 2 bars down add ½ a quart.
