E60 M5 or 997 carrera S????

Well I am most definatly buying a new car this spring, all of my r.e development projects are finished and I have some cash waiting to buy a new car for the spring. I have a deposit on an m5, I should be one of the first I did it over a year and a half ago, but the 997 is pretty nice also, I doubt it will be as fast as an M5 but its a Porsche and its a real sports car. What should I do... I do think that there will be less M5's in my area, boston, that 997's so the m5 could be more unique.

m5 NO DOUBT. It will run circles around the Porsche and haul the family to boot. BTW, new M5 won't be out this spring. Next fall for the USA

Well, they are both great car ! If I were you I'll decide based upon whether I will need the seats in the back. If so, I'll stick with the M5, else, it will be a bit difficult, but I'll go with the 997. Good Luck !

If you are looking for straightline speed, and back seats then the M5 would be a good choice, but if you want a better driver feel, and a better track car, a real sports car than get the 997. No matter people tell you the M5 is not a great track car. The previous version went up against the M3, 911 (99'-996), and a host of japanese cars and pretty much got worked over. While they were impressed with how the car handled for such a heavy car, they still said it was too heavy.

Fanman's right. I'm both a bimmer and p-car officionado. But, for my daily driver, I'd rather have a lighter weight, better handling car.

But, if you want a bit more luxury, more straight line speed, and a true 4-5 seater, the M5 is the way to go. Well, if you can get to like the Bangle butt and the Dame Edna headlights. I'm beginning to get used to them on the 7 series. But, still haven't gotten used to the Bangle butt on the 5. I guess it's kinda like when the fat lip (can't recall who was the first here) and the bulbous booty (Jennifer Lopez) look started coming into vogue for women. Just took me a while to get used to them!

997 all the way! the new m5 is smg not even a stick! I currently have an m5 and it's a fabulous family car to take on trips and what not, but nothing beats the porsche in fun i think. It's more nimble and more of a sporty feel. I too was thikning along those lines, but p is the way to go over here!

You still have to wonder how BMW produces a 200 MPH v10 paddle shifter 4 door sedan for about the same price as Porsche gives a 6 cylinder.

It does kinda leave you asking for a bit more.

I do agree that a Porsche is more fun, but I really cant swing buying a 997 Turbo, Im only 25... I can image that car woudl be well of 130k with options... I could buy an m5 and a 1994 turbo for that money.. Im not sure if a stock 997 is quick enough for me... I really have to drive one... I

Darren, there not my cars..my brothers are weird, their profesion has them in the public eye and their strange when it comes to posting pictures of their possesion.. who knows.. I have Shelby pics those from my normal brother. If you want I will post them.

New Excellence magazine review of the 997 S has Walter Rohrl suggesting it is only a few secs (if even) off the 996 Turbos pace on the Ring, an incredible improvement from the previous generation (996 c2).

hardly slow.

I think the decision comes down to whether you want a sedan (M5 wins) or a real sports car (which the M5 is not, 997(s) definitely is). Recent review in EVO was about as positive as a review can get.
