Do you only buy "N" rated tires for your 997?

I'm looking at getting a new set, but I have heard that you should onlt get "N" rated tires for our 997's.

Pardon my ignorance, but to me it sounds like BS.

So if I get a set of 235/35/19 & 295/30/19's that are not "N" rated, is my car going to have problems or not handle as well.

Please help me understand/learn.

I have heard that it isn't a good idea to mix N's with non N's.

If you are replacing all 4 then you should be fine.

Yes, the "N" tire is made exclusivly for the 997. Why would you not want to get the correct tire made for your vehicle?
Should there be an accident your insurance co. may deny claim based on using incorrect equipment. Sound really dumb but you never know what they will say.

i don't think they are that much more money if you get them from the right source. at least that was from my research which i ended with N for my 997.

Basically Porsche N ratings simply verify that Porsche has tested and approved that tire for their cars.

There has been endless debate about weather the N rated tires are different from the non N rated versions of the same tire - there is no consensus so some of them are probably the same and some are probably different.

I would not hesitate to put good non N rated tires on my car if there was no N rated version available and I understood exactly what I was buying.

Some people always buy N rated tires some never. I personally don't think it is worth trying to save a few bucks buying the non N rated version of an N rated tire (e.g., PS2s) the cost difference is small.

Read some reviews and buy what you like there are tons of opinions but in the end the choice is yours.

A couple years back I had my local tire shop replace my stock PS2 "N" rated tires on my 05 Carrera with identical "N" rated tires. So I thought. When I got home to apply tire dressing, I noticed one rear tire looked different than the others. The shop had installed one non-rated "N" tire on the car. The tread pattern appeared similar but the side wall was different and the raised rubber section that protects the rim was not a large as the other three. So at least visually the construction is different between the tires.
I will stick with "N" rated tires for my Porsche's.

 

What companies make "N" rated tires for our 997's?

 

According to a Porsche Tire Brochure that I have the following tires have been approved.

Michelin Pilot Sport 2
Pirelli P Zero Rosso
Continetial Sport Contact 2
Bridgestone RE050
Yokohama Advan Sport

 

If my memory serves me right the 'N' designation has to with the ability of the tire to withstand the weight and dynamic flex offered by the 997. I believe the tread pattern is the same. The difference is in the sidewall flex characterics.

 

Now is there really a difference?

Would a non-"n" marked tire not be safe?

 

Porsche is so in-tune with the handling dynamics of their cars that they demand the suppliers of OE tires to manufacture them to their satisfaction. In other words Porsche whitecoats and Michelin whitecoats get together and design the tires around the cars.

Are the N spec different than non N spec? Yes. Could there be a difference in how the car handles if mixed? Yes. Is it recommended to mix? No.

If the car is under warranty stay with N spec tires, because they could refuse to honor warranty problems because you chose to not run their approved tires.
