What exactly are the differences, and is it an option, or are all those styles simply wider as a characteristic of that model?

The "thin" models are 71.18" wide in the rear and the "fat" models are 72.91" wide in the rear.

A "huge" 1.73" difference.

Just a [very] slightly wider "look" from the rear view.

Not an option.

Yes, just a characteristic of those models [4WD].

what about the 997 targa? didnt they come with a targa S with a widebody?

edit : looks like all 7targas where either 4 or 4S. so i guess there was no S targa. thus all were widebody

As mentioned by JEllis, all 4 and 4S models are wide bodied. Since all 997 Targas are either T4 or T4S, they are all wide bodied. The S designation has nothing to do with wide body identity.

+1 I think the S designation having to do with the "widebody" adage is one of the biggest mistakes I hear made when talking about the 911 line. However, the latest 911 designations are about the trickiest and confusing to figure out of any car so I cannot blame them.

Compared to the svelt rear ends of the 1970s, all these 997s have a biggo wide @ss to my untrained eye.
