Contrasting depreciation prices

I have noticed that the Turbo has taken a bit of depreciation hit , Cars are manheim well under 100 and selling retail significantly under what the MSRP price was. In fact a low mileage used Turbo will cost less than a C4S PDK (comparing both stock) .

The same is going on with the Cayman . Prices are at 30K for a non S ?
http://www.motivemag.com/pub/feature...ut_There.shtml

Yet the 997S has bucked the trend as these cars have held up quite well in this recent economic climate .

So --this begs the question -- have the used car shoppers considered the other models ?

1 used Turbo < 1 loaded C4S
1 used 997S = 2 X Cayman

These contrasting price points look quite appealing. No ? Yes?

What data do you have to support this claim? (not being on the list is not enough proof IMO)

I'm a buyer actively looking and I see great buys across the board.

One thing is for sure...its a great time to buy.

I concur with yrralis1, I was in the market for a 996 turbo for that very reason, they were remarkably cheap and a good value. Not sure why though. I also did notice that the S cars were holding their own very well and couldn't find a good deal. Despite the prices of the S cars I stumbled across a Black 2006 997 C4S with 12k miles that was a desperation sale and snatched it up. This is truly the best time to find buys. Been driving it for about a month and LOVIN' IT

I'll concede that the anecdotal data shared in this forum is not a solid study but rather an informal one .If you wish to show us actual prices paid for cars in line with the proportion of Turbo and Cayman buyers and sellers looking at lower numbers.. please do. My first sentence of my original post was that "noticed" a trend expressing that my refereces are merely observation.

Price has discussed at length on 6speed and I have yet to see anyone buy a 997S at the same proportionate depreciation rate . Here is a manhein thred on an 06 https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...97s-coupe.html

Look at an 07 Turbo in comparison https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-07-turbo.html

Yrralis1 is just providing observations ... which what these boards are for.

If you want true hard facts than start looking yourself at all the data you can find and then you still have to filiter out was is fact and then was is opinion.

Every forum is only as good as the people on them, they are ALL POSTS OF OPINIONS and personal views on a certain subject.

If you have come to a forum for 100% accurate posts all the time, then good luck.

That being said forums are the best way to get opinions and insights from thousands on certain subject that provide imeasurable help and guidence into a multitude of topics.

BTW YRRALIS1 always have great info on the market and alwayd keeps and eye on it and has helped many new buyers on this board with their purchases and possible purchases...

his opinion saved me from buying a car that i shouldn't have and if i didn't take his advise I would have not found my current car and got such a good deal!

I'm definitely not an economist, but based on the couple of links provided by yrralis1, these are my thoughts.

The market has seemed to have spoken and has determined that it will pay more for a 997S then most of the 996 models. Therefore, (with the exception of 996GT2's, and some 996GT3's) the prices of the used 996TT's are making up the economic floor that the 997s prices are sitting above.

Since the prices of 997S didn't start out as high as the 997TT, they could only drop so much in value, and yet still be priced more than the 996's.

Basically, what it comes down to is the 997TT higher initial prices had a much longer way to drop before they are stopped by the prices of the used 997s and some high mileage 997 GT3's.

Once again, just my opinion based on a few 6speed threads.

Thanks for the kind words expressed on the thread . Since the mid 90's when I bought my first 911 I began to watch the prices . I was younger and spent so much to buy the car that i kept track of it's value as i owned it . Later on it simply became fun .

Mobonic --I am glad you found the car that's generated such fun at a decent price . That's what its all about .

docdan --the interesting thing of the current generation Porsches is not just the Turbo . Look at used Cayman prices . The used Cayman pricing is actually a bargain .

With the Turbo it is unusual that both the 996tt and 997tt took such a hit . The former Turbos did not . I speculate that it's because at the time the 993tt was made there were no others cars in that price range which dared to challenge it.

IMO --both the Cayman and Turbo on the used market are the current day deals to be found.

The example of a 44% depreciation of a Turbo from '03 - '09 is BETTER than I would expect. Jeesh, a six year old luxury/sports car holding value like that is excellent. Many of the examples on that list also have the related problem of being one refresh out of date. For example, the instant the C2S had 385hp and PDK, the prior version lost an EXTRA chunk.

Most (including me) thought this would happen . But it wasn't as drastic .
Here's why ... Porsche launched the CPO program in August . The biggest economic freefall was in October right at the PDK launch . This snagged the entire car industry.

Used cars suddenly look attractive when one is trying to save money .
The 997S had it not been so successful might have dropped . To me that's an indicator that this car has tremendous value . But for the used car shopper how much lower can a Turbo go? How much lower can a Cayman go? Why not buy a Turbo which has taken a huge hit over a new 997.2 ? Why not buy a used Cayman at 30K if one is really trying to save ?

Some MUST have the 997S . i understand . But there are some used car values within these other models that ought not be ignored .

My apologies.

I reread my post and I think I came off too harsh and criticizing. This was not my intention.

Your statement about the 997s bucking the trend is a very powerful one.

I just was asking if you had some data to support this statement because you have influence here.

And if its just your obeservations thats OK by me.

Aesthetically speaking, I can agree with the market...

I only like the 997/997.2 and the 993 models [modern 911s].

Thanks for posting this, it makes me feel a little better.

I bought an 05 C2S w 18k miles CPO and well optioned in August and personally noticed a $5k discount in prices then and now for the same car (less than 6 months later). I shopped around and at the time I paid less than most.

Depending on whether it's CPO or not It can range from the low 50's ( bargain) all the way to the low 60's (overpriced) .

53.5 K ought to get a private sale .
56.5 K CPO and dealership niceties.

The mileage is a plus .
