1st Track day of 2009

I went up to Summit Point yesterday to instruct for the BMW CCA. This was the first time I attended this event without my M3 (which I sold to buy the C2S). I took the Porsche out for two of the Instructor sessions and blew away all the BMW's, including the new M3. In the morning Instructor session I passed all the other Instructors. In the afternoon there was another Porsche, a 993. It had "R" compound tires and he was a tad faster through the corners, but not on the straights. Again, I had all the BMW's for lunch.

After each session, I parked the C2S and the next time I started it up the car emitted huge billows of white smoke from the exhaust. It went away after about two minutes, but it looked pretty bad. Anyone know what could be causing that??
TIA,
Mr. B

Nice, Glad to hear that you were enjoying it on the track. I haven't been to the track this year, I will be out April 10, can't wait!

As for the smoke, I have seen it before, not on my car, but I have heard that it is common. Just tell your BMW friends that it is all part of the plan to smoke them!

Did you check the oil level? Could the smoke be due to burning oil? This is just a total guess.

The oil level is fine.
I've been hearing that this happens to 997's that are tracked hard and that the solution is to swap out the oil separator for a high performance oil separator. I think it's called the "Porsche Motorsport Separator."

I guess I am not tracking mine hard enough, I haven't had any smoke from mine.

I guess I better go to the track and start trying!

Mike R. is infamous around these parts
I've actually had the smoking issue quite a few times. It always seemed to happen on tracks with tighter, quick turns, i.e. Lime Rock and Summit Point, but not at tracks like Watkins Glen. I thought it may have been b/c there was too much oil (the higher end of the normal range). I'm going to inquire about the Porsche Motorsport Separator.

Way to go Mr B. It's a huge generalization I realize...the PCA instructors are typically much better drivers on avg than the beamer clubs. Track etiquette is much better as well.

Methinks you're a bit prejudiced. I've instructed for just about everyone who runs an event at Summit Point. It turns out that a lot of Instructors teach for many clubs, so you often see the same guys & gals instructing for the BMW CCA and the PCA.

So, I can't agree with you when you say PCA Instructors are better.
The last time I ran in the BMW CCA Instructor group I was in my 2004 M3 and I was among the faster drivers but there were just some faster cars out there. This past Sunday I was in my C2S and I had a ball passing ALL those BMW's !!
