997.2 Fueling issue / Solution

Over the last week. Every time I tried to fuel the car up at the gas station, the pump keeps shutting off after a few gallons. As if the tank is full but it's not.

This has the same symptom/issue as my Corvette did.

Does anybody else have this issue?

So, today I used the same trick as I do with my vette and if worked fine and filled non-stop. Just put nozzle into the tank backwards. Like this.

That's the way to do it. I suggest though that you hold to the nozzle as I have seen those popping out when they shut off (and they can damage the car). I've seen a nozzle popping out unattended and that was even in the conventional orientation.

i went to the dealer last week and they told me that this was a common problem and suggested filling the car with the nozzle turned 90 degrees. Sounds like 180 may work better!

What? Um does California have diferent laws about their gas pumps? (CARB b/s) Because I've never had that issue on any P-car, unless something was wrong with the vehicle.

I don't think anything is wrong with the car. I noticed this with my previous 997 and new 997.2. Older pumps worked fine where as newer pumps shut off before it gets full. I didn't have a good solution until now. I learn new things from this forum everyday.

It's funny...I don't think the techs at the dealerships know this...I have asked around over the past month or so that I have had the car, and I get blank looks and lots of head-scratching...I will let them know so hopefully it will help others who don't read forums like this one!

My dealer suggested the same thing - in fact, they use the 180 all the time when they fill up the cars before delivery. If I use the normal way - I usually get between 3/4 and 4/4, but never full - the 'twist' gets me to 4/4 every time.

fuel filling gymnastics

I see some potential problems-- like an accidental overfill with a nozzle fitted against its design purpose .

When I have faced the hesitation fueling that you describe I have found that manually selecting a slow gradual flow method has worked.

It worked! Full tank of gas this morning. No spills. I tried the normal way and it shut itself off after 2 gallons. I fliped it around and gave me a full tank. I think the pumps are too sensitive. I held on to the nozzle to make sure it doesn't pop out by accident.
