997s overall reliability
997s overall reliability
So, I am in the midst of selling my 993 C4S and looking to pick up a used AMG SL 55 or 997 C2S Cab. There is a local to me car that surfaced, and I just want to hear soem feedbacks from the general on its overall reliability. I heard issues from leaky RMS, PASM not function properly.. what else should I look out for?
In a nutshell, how bullet proof are the 997 " s " engines? If the engine was to FI, are the internals actually strong enough to handle the power. i.e. VF s/c kit
Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the SC kit . The general sentiment on the basic reliability appears positive . I had two 997S cars and both had no issues . Sold both before 10K mi though .
RMS is a concern but not the norm . It's worth inspecting though. A few people have reported a rattle or a chatter but you don't see any posts here where forum members are breaking down .
PASM has electronic sensors which would signal the owner or any problem and again major failure is not the norm .

I'm up to 23.5k in my 997S and so far so good. I wanted to take advantage of my warranty before it expired but had no reason to bring it in. I've done some stupid things in the car and it still performs strong.
I have 33K miles, and one problem (although I bought it with 20K - though no documented priors) but fixed under warranty. A flywheel sensor that triggered a CEL randomly on cold starts. My dealer was a veritable Sherlock Holmes to figure it out. Quite laudable, but I believe very rare/unique problem. So far, the rest of the car has been excellent.
I drive my car very hard at the track, I find the more I drive it, the better this car runs. I have yet to make a warranty claim on this car, the 997 is the best built car I have owned.

I can't pretend to be an expert on SL55's, but I have owned a CLK55 and a C55. While they didn't have engine problems, they had little mostly electronic annoyances from time to time. I've heard that the SL's are a lot more "finicky", at least in the earlier model years. I'd be willing to bet that a 997 will be less troublesome than the SL55. My C2S had about 25k on it when I sold it, and it was trouble-free except for a plugged AC evaporator drain that was replaced under warranty. My current T4S has 14k and has had no issues. Both my 997's have seemed to get better as they racked up the miles.
Re FI, BLAKD OUT had one on his track car that was driven very hard, and it didn't seem to hurt it. Check following thread and search for the others that covered superchargers.

OP: The 55K engine is strong, mod friendly and very reliable for me. The only problem that I had was with the IC pump but that's easily fixed at the dealership. Good luck on your search.
Hey Ken,
You're worried about reliability of a 997S but not the SL55??
Seriously, 997S is quite reliable. Actually all 911 are quite reliable. There is a reason why people keep coming back to 911.
Keep us posted.

Guys, thanks for the reply and feedbacks. I just cannot stay put, always have the itch to try different cars. And it is becoming a problem...for my wife and my wallet.
