Question Issues with wheel shimmy post spacers

Hi All,

I'm opening this up for discussion, because I could use a bit of help. On Friday we installed a new set of H&R spacers on my 2006 C2S. I love the look of the new stance, but I've noticed the following two issues, which we are trying to troubleshoot:

1. "Shimmy" in the steering wheel when I get above 45 mph; it's particularly noticeable on "rougher" roads, but it feels like it's there on pretty much everything.

2. Less "bite" on initial turn-in; the car feels a bit "heavier" in the steering feedback and the turn-in doesn't feel as crisp as it did pre-spacers.

We did 7mm front and 15mm rear. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Not sure, but I think you need to align the car after the spacers...

Carl,

I assume you tightened the bolts to spec after putting on the spacers? If so, my next assumption would be that the spacers are hubcentric for the rims that you have?

Both of these can cause vibrations in your steering wheel if not done correctly.

Yes and yes,

I'm going to check on the alignment; I think it's the next logical step unless anyone has any other suggestions.

The front spacers are not hubcentric, the rear ones are. It doesn't leave a lot of bit on the hub, perhaps your front wheels have less bit then the OEM wheels that I run with my spacers (same sizes that you run).

I have tracked my car numerous times with the spacers and I have driven at 150 mph (240 km/h) and it is smooth, I also don't have any negative effects on steering.

Are you able to swap to a OEM wheel to try it out, an alignment might be over kill, I didn't get one when I added spacers.

Spacers will not effect alignment. Probably improper mating of wheel to spacer.

Ditto on no alignment regarding spacers.

I suspect one of the following: the spacers might be 'warped', not the correct ones, bolts aren't seating right or possibly they have some sort of build up (ie. grime/dirt) to prevent them from mounting flush.

Did you change the bolts as well? If so, did you use the correct Porsche type bolt? For example the bolts for the rear spacers (15mm) s/b WHEEL BOLTS PORSCHE 14 X 1.5 60MM THREAD LENGTH/19MM HEAD.

I installed H&R spacers earlier this year and have not experienced the symptoms you are describing above.

As has been pointed out, the fronts are not hubcentric (at least in 7mm form) but a bit of the hub is exposed such that there shouldn't be any issues with mating the space to the hub and the wheel to the spacer.

You might want to take everything off and put everything back on. When I did the install, I used a pin that screwed into the hub/spacer like the bolts do as a guide for my wheel. You can buy one cheap on ebay - in fact, buying two will make mounting even easier. Link is below.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I use these ones, you can buy them from your local dealer for about the same amount.

I installed spacers this past weekend and have aftermarket wheels with no issues you have described. Granted they are only 5mm on all four corners (due to my wheel offsets), but I would echo the same sentiments as mentioned above. I assumed you had to use longer lug bolts? Were the spacers bought new?

Hope you get the issue resolved soon.

The first thing I would do would be to remove the wheels and spacers and thoroughly clean the hub area. Even the smallest bit of dirt or grime between the hub and the spacer could cause the vibration you're describing.

When you mount the front wheels (with the spacers that are not hubcentric) ask a friend or someone to help you and try this. Put all 5 lugs through the wheel and spacer first, then have you or your friend hold the wheel up and tighten each lug a little bit at a time. Basically you need to insure that the spacer sits evenly on all five lugs. If it's the slightest bit off, it will cause the same effect as a wheel being out of balance.

Hope this helps.

How do the H&R spacers attach to the hub? The Porsche spacers are held in place by screws.

I understand the Eibach 7mm spacers are hubcentric...anyone use these before?

Buy this one. It's better (longer) and the same price. Nice!
