Lost art of saying hello
Lost art of saying hello
It has alway's been a custom to flash your headlight's when you cross path's with another Porsche. I came accross 3 Porsche's cruzing today, I flashed each one, no return flash or a hi sign.
I don't know if they are clueless noobies or just plain arrogant/rude.
Please sound off, I would love to hear your feedback

It's a lost art. When I had my old Corvette Stingray, we did it all the time. It was like winking in the Stingray. I sometimes get flashed in my old Porsche Slantnose but never in my Carrera.
We do it ATL - so far as I can tell - I have gotten several waves and flashes - almost as if to say, "we see you've finally come around...what took you so long?
".
I think it has to do with saturation - too many of the same car and it wears out. It used to be a BMW thing 20 years ago too, but now with every other car on the road here being a BMW, no one does it.

They say the South is strong in tradition. Kudo's to everyone down there in Atlanta where good manner's prevail.
Fyi BMW did not start this, the Porsche flash has been around since the late sixty's.

True P-car fans wave or blink. These days many drive a P-car for image and are not steeped into the tradition; those people tomorrow will drive the new fashion symbol and move on.

Not true at all. The lack of wave/flash is a recent phenomenon, as I said, with new buyers coming who know nothing about that tradition. Waving/flashing is a long American tradition, not only among P-car owners but also among other marque owners. I've often seen a Vette/Viper/Mustang owner wave me in a Porsche.

My observations are a 25 percent friendly flash , 25 percent see the car and ignore, 25 percent either smirk or show off , 25 percent simply miss it and are unaware. I have had brief conversations at red light or parking lot ,even told a few to stop by 6speed .
How do you all feel about waving and flashing to a Cayenne? I wave to all Porsches from 356s to Carrera GTs...the only group who ignore me completely are soccer moms in Cayennes and Boxsters (not sure why.)
I would wave to Cayennes but, as you say, the return sign misses 99% of the time. Boxsters are often driven by true P-car fans. I do not consider a Boxster a lesser Porsche.
Here in B'ham we definitely wave and flash lights to each other, but then again I can be driving my f150 around my house and I will get waves from people in my community. If I am in my 1973 FJ 40 Landcruiser I will get waves from other cruiser drivers out to the most recent cruisers. I really think it is cultural more so than anything. I am betting in Cali it is not so social which maybe due to the huge amount size of the general population.
I never get a wave or a flash when I am driving the Porsche, but it never fails when I am driving the M3. I think P-cars have become a status symbol and over 90% of current buyers don't have a clue about traditions that date back several decades. However a car enthusiast, what I would define as someone driving a specialty model like a GT3 or M3, recognizes the car as such and acknoledges the driver of it.
I have yet to cross paths with another GT3 in my area (plenty of Turbos, though they don't wave either) but there are enough M3s around that every single one of them waves or flashes.

And I have never seen another fellow Porsche owner flashing the headlights...
