DME results from my PPI, I need help!
Hey Larry, any final words of wisdom before I take my LONG road trip in the morning? Are there any specific things you would recommend I look for on this 2005 Launch car? Listen for, test, etc? I know you think I should walk on this car and I certainly respect your opinion. I just feel like I need drive and inspect it personally before making a final decision.
Thanks,
Jay

1) It's a voluntary behavior to drive to see the car .
2) It's a voluntary behavior if you write a check or decide not to.
3) Inspections are covered all over this thread and forum . The owner has stated his sentiment and so have a variety of posters each with an opinion in an effort to address your original questions.
Now the ball falls in your court and whatever choice you make --no one can make for you.
I will be the first to wish you well with or without the car . What is most important is that you are happy .
Make your choice and stand by your decision. Good luck.

Great points, bbwyu.
Let me clarify a few things: in the context of ranges 1,2,3,4 on DME scans, almost all used, manual transmission cars will have them. In fact, just starting your engine and letting the engine rev up, will cause over-revs in range 1,2. Just watch your ignition next time and check when your last range 1 and 2 occurred on your DME.
These rare examples of used cars with only range 1,2 but no other range overrevs are the exception, not the rule. They are also mainly tiptronic.

But as it goes, it's your own money. There's some great swamp land in Florida for sale, and I know of some great websites that sell placebos that cure every kind of illness. It is, afterall, whatever makes you feel better about spending your money. Evidence and truth are hard to argue. I invite you to shop around and inspect some CPO cars and see for yourself. Let us know if you find something different.
I've been to 3 dealerships and have another good friend shopping for a Porsche. There are CPO cars that have them, and the lots are filled with them.
My DME Scan Results
This thread peaked my curiosity about my 2007 base Carrera. I was just at the dealer for a warranty issue, so I asked the tech if he could pull the DME information. I track the car 3 or 4 times a year, and drive a total of about 5,000 miles annually.. Here are the results:
Operating Hours 241.000
R1 1,818@198.3 h
R2 83@198.3 h
No R3, R4, R5, R6
Any I don't baby the car by any means. It gets driven like a Porsche should.

Ok, I am considering a car right now and the DME shows the following
DME says number of ignitions per range is
Range 1: 24
Range 2: 1
Range 3: 1
Range 4: 1
Range 5: 1
Range 6: 1
So I am assuming this is a great readout? 1 ignition in range 6 based on what i am reading what does that mean? If you get 3 ignitions per revolution and range 6 is 9501 RPM I would guess the 1 is meaningless?

That is a great readout. The 1's must be an error in the print. The time in each range is cummulative, so in order to spend 1 ignition in range 6, you would need to have had a few ignitions in range 5 and so on. If it ever hit range 6, that is not good! Valve float time, i.e. valve hit the pistons!
Only because there is no indication that he did or did not purchase the car, I will put in my two cents from my own recent buying experience in April. Long story short, my car had mild results in the range 1-2 and minimal in range 3, with nothing in 4-6. When talking this over with the Porsche dealership (this was a private party sale BTW), they said these read outs mean nothing to them, unless something happens to the car. Even in those situations, they normally have to wait for an adjuster from PCNA to partner with to make a final determination on if they will cover a repair or not. This car is not even under warranty through Porsche at this point. Not sure that a third party warranty will care one way or the other. With all that said, I think that from the crazy amount of research I have done, ranges 1-3 are no big deal, ranges 4-6 raise a red flag in my book. Ultimately, as everyone has said (I read all 5 pages) that decision comes down to you. If it were me, I would pass. I spent close to 3 months trying to find the right car, almost obsessively on a daily basis. Not trying to screw another member out of a sale, but only sharing what i would ultimately do if it were me. GL with whatever you decide to do and if you decided to get the car, then don't look back and enjoy it every second you can.

Good luck with it. Be sure to get the paint checked for bodywork. Best to have the full inspection. I got an inspection on mine and they said the rear brakes were 8 mm. Just took it to the dealer and they said they were 5 mm! Can't trust anybody these days. Dealer managed to find an oil "leak". Looks like the rear main seal. Good thing these warranties...
Hope you get a nice car and join the club!

Hey JoeShark, I ended up passing on the car in question with the questionable DME readings. Gorgeous car, but I just couldn't make peace with how hard the car had been pushed. BUT, this story has a VERY happy ending!
I actually ended up linking up with another seller in Northern California while I was up there last Sunday. We have been finalizing the details of our deal all week long. To make a long story short, I'm hopping on a plane tomorrow morning to fly back up to Northern California to take delivery of my 1st Porsche! I will be making a 350 mile roadtrip back home to Southern California tomorrow, should be a blast! Once I get her home and cleaned up, I will make an official post introducing my new baby.
I can't thank you guys enough for your feedback regarding the original car in question, it really helped me out! I ended up with an amazing car, looking forward to sharing once I get her home safely.
Need to get to bed, big day ahead!!
