To mod or not mod the daily driver ?

I wrestle with this and i keep coming back to leaving them stock. But then I wonder. After all if the full monte is riding on the Porsche customizations what can compare to that ?

Every time I look at my M3 and think about modding it these thoughts creep in :
1) Its a waste to mod the M3 if that money could trade it in on a Porsche . the m3 runs great and still has free maintenance . It makes no sense to trade in yet .
2) Insurance / BMW warranty -- why bother paying more ?
So I keep the M3 and it stays stock.

Every time I think of modding the Honda Si -
I do feel a little "Fast and Furious". Although yesterday I took out both Honda Si cars with girlfriend's 20 year old son driving one and me driving the other . We drove slow (i am setting a role model example ) . It was really fun . He's all thrilled with the two year old Si that he now gets to drive and he told me that he wants to take track driving lessons . If I mention "exhaust" his ears pop up . One step at a time I think . Maybe I should mod one Si ?

So who mods the daily driver ? How does it compare when you already have the porsche ? Is it just a waste ?

I have my DD modded, it is more for the track, but if the right mods are done right the car is a lot more fun on the DD. Saying that, you have the TT and nothing else you have can compare. In parallel to you, I have a well modded 997C2S, and have no desire to mod my Touareg (I know it isn't the same as the M3).

I think modding a DD is fun as heck. Adds character and uniqueness to an otherwise common car.

I think you would have more fun modding the SI than the M3, IMO. There's a plethora of aftermarket support for the Honda, as well as relatively inexpensive products compared to the M3 or Porsche. It's also an opportunity to bond with your GF's son, especially if you guys can work on the car together.

Of course, no matter what mods you do to the SI, it's difficult to compare it to your modified Porsche TT.

Having said that, I have an 08 Accord EX-L V6 sedan as a DD. I did some minor cosmetic mods just for fun. I know it can never be what my C2S is right now, but heck, it's just fun doing it. Nothing over the top.

Well it's tough to decide :

1) With BMW I happen to live in the same region as Active Autowerke and they have awesome M3 stuff . I've been looking .

2) I've been looking at Honda too. 808c2s -- her son has reached out to both of us as he really never expected us to give him the car . He was walking to work and we thought about it but wanted him to see how hard it is to earn his pay . He's 20. It's time . He's thrilled .

Here's some mod ideas on both cars . I still am so on the fence with this . But my eyes are open

1) The M3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzuexPXg0PQ

2) The Si - This video shows a sedan but we both have the coupe

Oh man! That M3 sounds so good!

Well, what ever you decide, modding a DD is great fun. I think your GF's son would really appreciate it if it were done on your Si. Gives him something to look forward and relate to as he finally earned his rights to the other Si .

Agree with others. No matter what you do to the other 2 cars, they are still very far away from your turbo.

My club coupe is bone stock. Theoretically I can mod it like Ed and perform better on the track. But I found that the car is so capable in stock form that I cannot even drive it close to 9-10/10. So I decided to keep it bone stock and will mod my own driving skill instead.

When I come close to within 3 seconds of Ed's lap time in my stock car, I'll be very happy. And then time to get a GT3...

You are right . Today has been a long day . I called up my tuner who also woild mod my M3 if I wished and he was ready to do it . Then I thought about thse 997S price deals and ALMOST traded it in for a new 997S . I got close . First dealership only had one manual and I really dislike beige interior . The other two dealerships have black cars and i just can't see another black Porsche.

I drove a PDK . Nice car .. just not for me . It's quite an interesting transmission but too many computer choices and I prefer simplicity .

We got close on price. The 20 percent deal that Jersey 1977 got is the best one can get . No one gave me a price that good but they were competitive.

BTW --there is a real nice black car in West Palm Beach . It's two hours drive and I really don't want another black car but that car had limited slip and all the bells and whistles. A salesperson named James was great over the phone .

I figure I'll drive the M3 a bit more stock and then trade it in within one year. I did consider a Gt3 but not practical as a daily driver or to be parked outside . So a 997S is a definite maybe .

The Turbo will remain a garage queen .

Oh man, you've gotta mod the exhaust on the M3! The V8 doesn't make enough of a roar with the stock exhaust. Huge ear candy payoff and it doesn't affect the DD aspect of the car one bit. Suspension is personal choice. The M3 has great ride height stock and you probably don't want to sacrafice the cruising comfort.

Do the suspension on the Civic. Exhausts on them seem a waste of time. But the suspension could probably go a long way before it is uncomfortable and the payoff would be huge benefits in handling. Would be a lot more "stealth" that way and would probably be great fun in the twisties.

I had coilovers on my E46 M3 and it was great as a weekend car. Even for cruising with the family. But as a DD, the suspension was tiring. And the SMG was boring. Doesn't come close to my commute now with the S.

Okay.....

There are many reasons to mod. Of course the obvious one is to make the car perform better. The other is to make the car unique to you. So you dont really have to mod an SI or the M3 with the Turbo's HP prowess in mind as a goal or something like others appear to be implying.

So, simply put, I like having something unique.

If your M3 was mine (I used to have a 2008 M3 DCT Jet Black) this is what I would do.

20" LM's and KW V3 Coilovers for starters
VS front lip and rear diffuser
VS Ti Exhaust

Done... But if you are feeling frisky then a Brembo brake upgrade

As for the SI... yeah its hard not to think about all those rice rockets and race boy body kits.

I would stick to either JDM OE Type R stuff, Mugen, or Spoon

I believe JDM is in Miami too .
The mods I had tinkered with for the M3 were X pipe and Active ECU . Coilover suspension , brakes. Hre wheels 19 . Yank the silly run flats off the car. Some carbon fiber exterior parts .

For that 20K or so another ten buys an 09 997S with a 20 percent discount .

I would rather have a stock 09 997S than a modded M3 .
I wish I could love the BMW . I just don't.
