Extended warranty a good idea?

I have an 06 C4S. Runs great. I am the second owner. 19K miles.

My warranty is almost up. I thought a dealer told me Porsche will certify any stock car still under warranty for a price. Car runs fine.

How much and is it worth it? (or are there other options)?

Porsche engines do blow from time to time, new engine costs around of $20K.
So for me personally the longer I have a warranty on it - that longer I have a better night sleep.

CPO warranty costs probably in somewhat close to $3K or so. You can check it with your dealer or even may be negotiate it, who knows. Times are tough now.

Porsche can not "certify" a car if you own it. It has to be cetified as a used car (often times traded in) by meeting various criteria to establish that certification.
Lately it has come to the attention of some folks that even a certified car in a down economy may have been questionable yet it is stil is the best extended thing there is.

As for extended wararnty .. most of them are expensive, have fine print , and you know when you'll find out ? When a you have a repair DENIED.

My advice - Get the right car from day one placing all the money into a car with no doubts . Then you reduce the risk of getting flushed out financially on a big repair.

So you mean it can become CPO only if traded it and re-sold as a used car? That is odd. Naturally CPO warranty is the only thing worth doing as it is provided by Porsche itself.

Correct . One would have to sell his car to the dealership and buy it back. Not worth it.
CPO also is transferrable.

So he has two choices :
1) Either find a good quality private mechanic for out of warranty repairs .
2) Take the four years that he went to service and use that time to express appreciation for the guys who work on his car . This way .. they might actually want to help him after his warranty is done without quoting him the highest prices.

I agree. Just for peace of mind, I bought a 6-yr, 60k mile warranty at a fair price. I bought it from the dealer, so they will work on my behalf to get work covered, plus if they do the work there is no deductible. You need to look closely at the coverages and fine print, I recommend going with the Platinum or highest coverage level, and one which is an exclusionary warranty, meaning unless the contract expressly EXCLUDES something, it's included in the coverage. I didn't need more mileage because this isn't my daily driver. For that, I have an M5, which is an entirely different can of warranty worms...

I wonder about the warranty. I will likely put about 2K-4K miles a year on my car. I don't track it either. I never read about Porsche repairs bring too outrageous in cost. Ferrari comes to mind for that. I mean if I had repair bills at $5K a year, I'm OK with that. If they were more, I'd be more likely to consider selling it. On the other hand, I drove my '99 Carrera for 4 full years without a single hiccup. Is that typical? I guess I am expecting the same with my new Porsche.

What are the typical repairs you guys have come across. How often are you guys paying $5K plus a year for repairs / maintenance?

Thanks!

Wow, I bought the extended warranty for our Lexus when we got it - so glad I did and they treat us, so far, just like they have for the 1st four years. In fact, we had a little issue today and ran by there and they were so helpful.

My Porsche dealership is owned by the same people, so maybe the level of service will be the same - I hope so, but if I decide to keep this car past 4 yrs, I'll be extending the warranty for sure - just too much risk without it.

I have 65k on my C2S now, and have had to use my extended warranty once. Luckily, the amount my warranty paid to fix my car was more than I paid for the actual warranty.

I could have sworn a dealer told me I could bring the car in at any point while it was still under factory warranty and purchase the extension. Is that not true?

1) You can buy an extended warranty.
2) You can not buy a CPO .

1 and 2 are not the same. The CPO is a "certified Porsche" warranty and it's quite comprehensive . The extended warranty is a NON Porsche warranty often sold at Porsche dealerships but it is a third party policy. Much like any insurance they appear great but until you face an actual claim you won't know how great.

The greatest insurance of all is the factory warranty . Even that isn't always so wonderful but it's as good as it gets . The next best is CPO . After that extended is hit or miss . They make more than they lose and even if one makes a claim and is approved one still has to chip away at the high premium to buy it.

Conclusion - Spend as much as you can to get the most factory or CPO as possible . Then either find a private mechanic or hope that my being a decent and non demanding car owner that a dealership service will take all of that into consideration and want to help make repairs pleasant and somewhat affordable.

Hi All, newbie here... doesn't CPO stand for "Certified Pre-Owned"?.

Got This EMAIL today

Emailed a dealership in ATL about a '07 4S I made an offer on and his reply was he could sell me the car for $71000 WITHOUT the CPO or add another $1990 for the cert?! I thought once a vehicle has been porsche approved that's what you neg for. Doesn't sound like extended warr is any different from CPO
