Driving your first Porsche 911 home

There's a certain feeling driving home a new Porsche on the first day . Each Porsche is different and for me each of those first drives created lifetime memories .

The emotions were different on each .I even find that the drive home is different when alone vs having a passenger . Being alone with the car was different than sharing the first drive and both have been fun.
I can think of being so nervous in the new car . I can remember being thrilled and not nervous at all especially when I was younger . There's been a few times that I had to pinch myself because I wasn't sure I was going to buy the car and then it would all come to this emotional peak driving it home.

For some of you guys , this is your first Porsche and for others it isn't.
That first Porsche drive home is hard to even describe for me . Each Porsche after that I somewhat compared how they evolved at some point in my first drive .

The 997 cars have been so outstanding since 2004 I have driven home several and even those experiences were different .

Does anyone else remember and reflect on their first drive home ? If so what do you think about during the drive and when you reflect on it ? Do you replay it in your mind afterwards or just dismiss it? Is there anything significant about your first drive that you can think of ?

I COMPLETELY(!) remember my drive home. And, not just because it was only a couple of weeks ago, either. I remember thinking close to, oh, I'd say, half a million things while on the road to home. What stands out is the overwhelming feeling of, "Did I just do this? Am I really doing this, now? Am I owning and more importantly driving the car I've wanted since I was a young boy?", followed by a, "Holy crap...this is better than I imagined.". Repeat.

Not to wax too poetic but, it was a visceral experience of the senses that left me only partially satiated. I wanted more of it. I kept thinking just like Richard Hammond said on Top Gear how he never wanted to stop doing this, ever. I was, that day, more excited than I've been about a car in a long time.

Compared to my other first drives this one, as full-tilt exciting as it was, was ironically the most at home feeling of all of them. This car is where my head and heart is right now and it fit perfectly on the that drive back to the house.

Good thread!

I remember my first drive home, it was only a few months ago. I remember all the conversations I had here, the excitement of getting to learn all the features of the new car. Not knowing exactly how to drive the car yet, but SO wanting to just put my foot through the floor and go as fast as it would let me. The nervousness of owning my childhood dream car and becoming the best defensive driver I have ever been.

Taking the long road home and wanting to stop by every friends house to show it off, even though I really didn't care what they thought. The looks on people faces when they saw it driving by (this is not your average car on the road in my neck of the woods.) The feeling of being the only person on the road at the time and that things seemed to moving in slow motion, in a good way. I think it was the best drive home I've ever had.

Getting it into the garage, wiping it down, putting together a to do list on the mods, detailing and things I needed to learn. Standing back and just admiring the look of the car and then can't standing it any longer and I had to back it out of the garage and go for that one more spin around the block.

Yes, I think you can say I remember it quite like it was yesterday.

'MedPilot105' nailed it...though my first drive home was just a couple of weeks ago. It was from San Diego to Laguna Beach at sunset, with feelings ranging from "wow, this car is beyond what I expected" to "I am very, very fortunate to be in a position to own such a car." I've worked very hard to feed my car obsession over the years, and this 911 was the cherry on top after 18 other great vehicles. I'm quite certain there will always be a reserved space in the garage for a 911.

Similar to skizot, I remember my drive as well because it was only a few months ago. As some of you know, I flew down to Northern California to purchase my car and drive it home (about 600 miles). My wife came with me. I still remember meeting the owner at the Porsche dealership where I had my PPI done, walking to the service bay where the car was parked, coming around the corner and seeing the car for the very first time from the back (my favorite view). That's one visual memory that will stay with me for awhile.

In terms of the drive home, it was great having my wife with me. Took two days to get home so she and I could enjoy our time on the road. Nobody knew that I was getting the car so what turned out to be fun was my wife taking a pic of the car and myself as we left the dealership. She posted it on her facebook on the way home and within 30 minutes, she and I were getting text's and email's from our friends and family on "what is going on?", "is that really a Porsche?", "did you just rent that?", etc. All this was going on as I was driving home. She had a great time updating our friends on her facebook as we drove back.

In terms of the drive itself, I basically took it pretty easy for the most part. Just tried to get to know the car, listen to the engine sounds, and played with the PCM. Got a bunch of thumbs up's and a few cars wanting to race. Great roadtrip home and one that my wife and I hope to take again in the near future.

My first drive home with a Porsche was in July 1973 when I picked up a Polo Red 912 Targa from its original owner in Washington, DC and drove it to Virginia Beach, VA where I lived at the time. I had just graduated from college and was working for GE in Norfolk. I still remember the special smell of the original vinyl interior which is unique to those early manufactured Porsche cars. Once I got it home, I spent another hour seating in the car listening to shortwave radio in my standard AM-FM-SW Blaupunkt radio and just simply enjoying the occasion of my very first sport car acquisition. Very special indeed. Now, many years later, I have been able to recreate in part that period of my life having a '70 911E Targa (Crystal Blue) and a '73 911T Sunroof Coupe (Signal Yellow). Both are low mileage, original paint / interior vehicles in unmolested/unrestored condition. The Crystal Blue car won First in Class and First in Division at this year's PCA Parade in Keystone, CO. And the familiar aroma of the old factory vinyl and leather is still there to this day on each of these cars! However, I still have the desire of driving a newer 911 home. So I am now working on acquiring a 997 gt3 ('07/'08 RS or new '10) to keep these early 911's company. z356

Cool thread. I bought my first 911 about 6 weeks ago while on vacation with the family in San Diego. I bought it on the second day of a one week stay. It was agonizing having the new car sit in the parking garage while I was spending the days at Seaworld, SD Zoo, beach ,etc... The 300 mile drive home was great though.

But more fun was the first time I drove home in my first Porsche... a 2001 Boxster S bought sight-unseen from a guy in Seattle. I flew up from CA and then spent 3 days driving home via the Oregon coast and staying in little hotels in small towns along the way. I took many pics during this trip and remember it fondly.

I remember stalling twice on the trip home. My son followed me home and was just as excited as I was.

As fun

Nice thread.... as fun as your ride home is, I believe your first ride around the neighborhood streets you grew up on is as fun. Many do not live in the town they grew up in nor state but are withen a few hours of that area. Some have parents or siblings that still live in that area. To me, cruising around the streets I grew up on as a kid riding my BMX bikes and gallavanting around with my friends in my new P car was pretty cool... if you have never done it, and you spent your time as a kid hanging out on street corners *(those that did this will understand) give it a try.... a bit surreal at times during the ride and some strange flash backs....very nostalgic IMO

First Pcar: 964 C4, bought it used with 32,000 Kms., year 1990. Got it on October, 31, 2006 -- Felt fast, but unbalanced, strange, very different to all the other cars I had known until then. Sold it after 1.5 years with 34,500 Kms. on the odometer

Almost immediately after selling the car, I felt guilty ! And visited this forum and 6speedonline each day, as well as ebaymotors, cars.com and autotrader... Lusting after Porsches !

Second Pcar: 997.2 C4S, bought it new with 62 Kms., year 2009. -- I picked it up at 12:15 and left the dealer at 13:30 - It was Friday, August 7, 2009. It felt much more refined than the 964, but the 911ness could be felt immediately... Wow, 45 years of the 911 and the evolution has been so subtle, so well done... -- That day I took a long trip and put 450 Kms. on her. I remember parking the car in my garage at night, the next 2 days my back hurt, as my daily driver is a BMW X3 that feels and is much softer then the 997.2 C4S

I am in love again !

Mine was Saturday & all I wanted to do was get up that F'n 405 w/out some rock bouncing off the front!

I was driving like I had a newborn in the car- #3 lane , 70ish.

Felt like I was in a dream.

Still does.

That is a great idea. I'd love to drive the 911 in my old neighborhood (unfortunately it's about 2700 miles away).

About 6 weeks ago, my wife and I drove over to the dealer "just to look" (yeah, famous last words) at an '06 C4S that only had 4050 miles.

Well, it was love @ 1st drive - it had all the options and specific color I had been looking for, CPO'd, even smelled brand new. We were in and out of there within 2 hours; she followed me home in our truck while I, grinning like an idiot, made sure to not exceed the speed limit on the freeway ride home. It was probably the slowest drive on a freeway for me in years. A post above mentioned a slow mo quality to the ride home and I definately had that going on.

I remember thinking the whole purchase thing was a dream and like all good ones, I didn't want to wake up. And I still feel that way.

It was 2 years ago, first Porsche and first ever brand new car. The dealer, (Porsche Roslyn NY, very nice people) sort of let me alone with my car for a while, as if they understood we'd got to know each other. I eventually left, trying to convince myself that the bumpy hard seat feeling was a good thing. There was an accident on the freeway, the interstate was a car park. Took 2 hours to drive those 25 miles! I finally reached home and called the kids, telling them someone parked a nice car in front of our house. As we gathered around I pretended the owner let the door open and forgot the key. I suggested we'd go for a test drive around the block, I knew the owner, he wouldn't mind. They were terrified but got into the car. They won't forget either.
