Suspicious Mileage??

I just purchased a Duramteric kit, and when reading my friends car information it came up with "Operating Hours" of 1978 hrs. He bought his car from a dealer 3 months ago w/37,000 miles on it, and now has 41,631 miles

According to Durametric, you divide the mileage by operating hours, and by doing that I come up with an average speed of 21mph which seems really low (41,631 / 1978=21)

Durametric say this average should be between 30-50mph

Am i missing something, or should my buddy be going back to the dealer?

Is there another way of checking this, and will a PIWIS test do the same reading, or will it actually identify a mileage tamper?

Thanks!!

W

Mine was 30 right on the dot The one thing that got my friend going was the fact he bought a bit higher mileage car, but was told by the dealer it was 'all highway miles'

Maybe the guy before him did a lot of stop and go....the car is from Los Angeles after all....

Mine is just 25mph... Daily driver used in Bay Area traffic, so I'm not overly surprised.

Mine has never been higher than 28 unless I start over while on the highway and even then it drops like a rock once you're in traffic or at a stop light. I would believe 21. And as VSE Chuck said, when you're stopped in traffic you're recording 0 miles an hour.

I thought with all the modern electronic monitoring and the OBD that it is virtually impossible to tamper mileage. How can the mileage be altered or stopped without the computer recording some sort of faults?

As was stated.. as you sit at a red light... thats 1/2 to 1 minute of doing 0mph. If you drive around town significantly, I suspect most of that averages out to a pretty low speed. Unless there is a lot of highway/track time to counter that... the reading seems ok to me. If it was under 15, I'd be concerned.

Installing a new instrument cluster will effectively reset the mileage to "0". Thus, the average mph by the Durametric method will read low. Mine is at 34 mph but, I just interrogated a buddy's new 06 C4S and it came in around 24. I guess the type of driving can really change this.

Other manufacturers include some logic in their management systems to discard time spent stopped from average speed and similar calculations. My observation is that Porsche doesn't, as mentioned above.

My average speed after 3100km is 20mph. Apologies for the mixed measures.
